Don't forget, a 4.0L with 160HP and a 2.5 with 168 HP (ie M20) are designed for different things. The 4.0 has around 238 ft/lbs of torque IIRC. Plenty of get up and go, just not much top end. It works well for light towing (better with the 5 speed than the slushbox).

The 4.0L pushrod engine is bulletproof, yes - but thirsty and gutless.If you do buy one, get one with the 4.0 pushrod V6. One of the few things ford has nailed is the pushrod engine, their OHC engines are much more prone to issues.
If you happen to find one with the pushrod v6 and a manual transmission, you're set. If you get one with the offroad package, it might even have a factory limited slip rear end. IIRC it's skid plates, bigger rims, and a T2-R diff.Comment
