So what's the deal with water bottles?

BPA free poly? Stainless Steel? Lined Aluminum?

    Which is safest and why?

In order to safely drink from such water bottles, one must stand in the shade on level ground and have a friend watch. I am not responsible for any injuries due to negligence.

You sir are a funny man. I was referring to safety in terms of materials leached into contents of each of the aforementioned containers.

I figure breath enough and eat enough chemicals on a daily basis, a water bottle is the least of my concerns.

If you eat any food that comes from a packet, or a take away/fast food chain, water bottles should be the least of your concerns.

Go to 7 eleven and get a 99 cent bottled water and just keep refilling it.

Buy a jug of simply lemonade, apple juice, etc. Drink contents, BAM! You get a free 2 liter water bottle that smells slightly fruity.

I actually picked up one of those Brita bottles with the filter inside.

Other than that I use all 3. Nalgene for camping, alum for putzing around.

I used to drink at least a gallon of OJ a day when I worked at Kroger. It was cheaper than soda, and lasted me all day. Had calcium and all that shit too, so it was better for me.

Nalgene is good but I usually keep a BPA free bottle next to me. When its 100*C outside, I could care less what its in!
