I will look into that route a bit deeper, it was my original plan but then I got playing with new stuff and though what the hell why not just start with new.
I've bought almost all of my stuff used and have saved thousands over the price of buying new. Also with a used lens you can often sell it for around the same price you paid for it. I've also never needed to use or wished that I had a warranty. However USA Nikon lenses come with a five year warranty which is one of the longest in the industry and if the price between used and new are close, I would definitely go with the new.

so generally, Nikon is a better brand than Canon in terms of cameras, or DC, for that matter?

        Ummmm no?

Each makes entry level, consumer, pro-sumer and professional grade bodies. They also both make crap lenses and both make high end professional grade stuff.

They are equal. Popularity wise Canon has the edge without a doubt but quality wise there is no 'better'. I think this is due to price... and marketing. Those white lenses are usually cheaper than the Nikkor counter part and they are white. Looks boss.

Look how much work I am doing... if lens was black? It wouldn't be quite as much work...

And yep if the lens was black you could have a 200-400 and be doing less work :p

+1 they are definitely different, but neither one is necessarily better. And I feel like Nikon has slowly been gaining back some of the market share recently.

If you have friends with cameras, I would choose whichever brand they use.

Yeah I dont have too many friends that are into anything like this. 99% of my friends live in other states 1000's of miles away, just where I like them (I am not a people person)

we dont have a good camera shop up here just the big boxes. So its mostly online stuff for most stuff other than batteries and memory cards lol.

I really appreciate the insight here guys, it helps.

well thought I would up date this a little bit.

I went with dinanm3atl advise and that of a TON of personal research, that all pointed to this being the best choice for my budget and what I want to do with it, and went with a lightly used Canon 40d (under 10k clicks for 400 bucks). In scouring the Interwebs I have put together a hodge podge of equipment for less than the discounted costco price of the d5100 kit I was considering at the beginning of this thread.

1 Canon 40d body with the box and all the shit came with it with a touch over 10k clciks)

1 Canon EF 28-135 F/3.5-5.6 USM/IS, was a kit lens from a 7d that was never used, guy had L glass already

                1 Older Canon EF 100-300 F/4-5.5 USM

1 Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 Prime Aka Nifty Fifty

and some more C/F memory from Amazon

Still need to pick up a case/bag and some other minor odds and ends but all in all I think I did well. Glass will be slowly upgraded as I figure out what I really need and want.

Again thanks to all!!!! The Fedex UPS and Post office all say my shit will be here sat or monday I cant wait !!!!!!

The 50mm alone will make you fall in love all over again with photography. In my mind there is nothing like primes. There will forever be my fav. With the coverage in length you have there you've pretty much got yourself covered. And just like you said, you can upgrade glass after you find what you enjoy shooting the most/etc.

                  Happy shooting!

Not to thread jack but, I've got an xsi and have been thinking about possibly upgrading to a new body. I would possibly go used as well so what I'm wondering is where's the best place to look for used equipment?
                    thanks

Ebay believe it or not is a good place to look for stuff, my 100-300 and Prime were found on ebay. Bodies and kits seem to be selling kinda high there, but there are other options out there.

But like others have said and my Gpa always told me, chasing the body is a never ending endeavor, invest in the glass 1st. You can mount anything with a EF/EF-S mount on that rebel. Invest in some good glass if you haven't 1st, then worry about the body. I was starting form scratch again and this will be my 1st venture into the digital SLR world so thats why I was looking for advice.

                      Devo:
Yup thats the plan anyway. Its mid level glass for the most part not the uber cheap lower end Kit lenses but no where even close to the L lenses. Should serve me well to relearn with anyway. Thanks and I hope to have fun with this again.

Well today was like Christmas in September.

USPS, FedEx and UPS have been kind to me today. Nearly everything showed up before noon today only waiting on my 50mm and my Domke F2. will get some samples posted in the next day or so.
