Nice kit! I also have a 40D and I love it! Been using it for a few years now. Do yourself a favor and look into the 17-55 EFS lens. This one:

Not as long as the one you have, but almost "L" IQ. It's also a constant f/2.8, so you won't ever need a flash with it.

Yeah that one is on the short list as of right now, to consider after I get some time in on this stuff to see what I really need for my uses when it comes time to start upgrading the glass. I just wanted to get started again.

Ok quick one Just think this is kinda a neat one. Neighbors up the road are picking the wheat fields and that Bright green outta focus blob in the middle is a NEW John Deer Combine. Well it kinda lost some "pop" in the up load but oh well, seems like bucket pulled some color out.

It's not a pro model, but I love my prosumer pentax. If you're into it, you're shooting in manual anyways and you can use any pentax lens back to 1972(k mount) without adapters and screw mounts if you want to deal with adapters. Here's where the practicality comes in. I've built up a collection of manual prime lens' with unbelievable glass from shopping at goodwill, and pawn shops. Average cost of a 50mm pentax prime lens on the used market ~50 bucks. Plus the pentax has the image stabilization built into the body and not the lens, so any lens can be stabilized if you find yourself without your bogen.

Next on the hunting list is a 40mm pancake. Old metal Pentax smc lens' are really good quality.

All that being said, if you want the latest technology, the best support, the easiest to get help with, nikon or canon. I have both nikons and canon consumer cameras and go back and forth as to what I like about them.

Just a note: as an avid outdoorsman who likes to shoot shit the upgrade to the D200/D300 is huge in the build. Full metal body that is sealed all over. Makes a huge difference if you get rained on.

Being said the D90 was a great novice camera, Im sure there is a newer model though. I wouldnt go below the D80/90 on the Nikon though, make sure its got an in-body motor. That means you can still use lenses that are as old as you are if you want to.
          Im now E30less.
