    Stay at home mom/homemaker exstinct?

Hi! Im a 28 year old Floridian who has been married alittle over a year, and is the proud father of a 16 month old boy. My back ground is Jamaican and my wifes folks are White American (dad) and Cuban (mom). Our grandparents on both sides came from a rural country life, so the dynamics of the family was pretty much the Man works outside the home, and the wifes were stay at home moms and homemakers. Both my parents worked since they were teenagers and all my aunts and uncle who are married lead households were both parents work. I never even thought that stay at home moms/ homemakers existed in the lower to mid middle class anymore until I met my wife six years ago. Her dad was an electronics engineer and her mom a stay at home mom/homemaker.
Her parents divorce in her mid teens and the mom has been unstable financially ever since cuz she has no college education and can't seem to hold down a decent job. In my family, all women work and the majority of them have bachelor's degrees. I'm all for women staying at home if they choose to; that's part of the reason why I began pursuing my degree in Electrical Engineering. I know the earning potential would allow my wife the choice to be a stay at home mom. If I made a few more bucks an hour than I do now, we could do it, but then we'd be living paycheck to paycheck and never be able to buy a house or have decent cars with which to haul kids and groceries around. I wanna make a good living that will allow for home ownership, savings, good health insurance for my family and giving my wife the opportunity to be a stay at home mom and not feel so disconnected as a mother. Seeing as how the economy is screwed up and the average American home has a dual income household, I'm a little nervous that I might not get to realize this dynamic of family life. Any of you have stay at home wives?

You also said cuz rather than because.

But that is besides the point. My girls mother is a stay at home, but she is literally the busiest person i know. Mows the lawn, cleans the house, cleans the pool, cooks dinner, feeds the dog etc, etc, etc.

I do not feel as thought it is extinct, but is getting more and more rare as the classes of wealth separate even further. Do what makes you guys happy, while earning, and spending within the boundaries of your life.

        ....if that makes any sense.

With a large mortgage, it simply isn't possible for us but my plan is to for my wife to be able to stay at home with our boys within 2 years. I'm working for 1 year but it may take longer.

Nope, we wouldn't be able to come close to sustaining our lifestyle while also saving for retirement if she didn't work.

My wife makes more than I do.

No kids either. Too time consuming and expensive.

My wife has stayed home for the last 28 years.
our kids benefited greatly, as did I.
We could have been further ahead money wise, but no regrets.

My mom has never had a secular job. She raised us three boys. It was the best.

my mom is a stay at home mom, and my dad could absolutely support it, and my wife has been a stay at home wife/mom for the past 6 years, I couldn't imagine how she COULD have a job. Who would clean my clothes, cook, clean the house, watch the kid etc etc... I wouldn't want to make the in-laws watch the kid all day, and daycare is expensive. Also, I value spending quality time with one's kids.

My mom became a bus driver when I was in 4th grade, to make some extra money and have the same days off as me and my 2 younger siblings. But now the youngest is a senior in high school and my mom, because of all her time driving, is not a business agent for a big local union. (inB4 union shit, I am anti union as well but she is doing well for herself so I can't complain.)

I think there is a lot of pressure for people in high school now because now it has become expected to go to college. So both genders are attending colleges and then expected to have a career in something they studied.

I think in shitty times like these, a sane woman should offer to help pull the rope. Atleast some kind of paid home job, daycare for the neighbors, etc. etc. Depends on the situation of course.

I'm hoping my girlfriend gets a job that will allow me to stay home when we have kids.
