Hi! Im a 28 year old Floridian who has been married alittle over a year, and is the proud father of a 16 month old boy. My back ground is Jamaican and my wifes folks are White American (dad) and Cuban (mom). Our grandparents on both sides came from a rural country life, so the dynamics of the family was pretty much the Man works outside the home, and the wifes were stay at home moms and homemakers. Both my parents worked since they were teenagers and all my aunts and uncle who are married lead households were both parents work. I never even thought that stay at home moms/ homemakers existed in the lower to mid middle class anymore until I met my wife six years ago. Her dad was an electronics engineer and her mom a stay at home mom/homemaker.
Her parents divorce in her mid teens and the mom has been unstable financially ever since cuz she has no college education and can't seem to hold down a decent job. In my family, all women work and the majority of them have bachelor's degrees. I'm all for women staying at home if they choose to; that's part of the reason why I began pursuing my degree in Electrical Engineering. I know the earning potential would allow my wife the choice to be a stay at home mom. If I made a few more bucks an hour than I do now, we could do it, but then we'd be living paycheck to paycheck and never be able to buy a house or have decent cars with which to haul kids and groceries around. I wanna make a good living that will allow for home ownership, savings, good health insurance for my family and giving my wife the opportunity to be a stay at home mom and not feel so disconnected as a mother. Seeing as how the economy is screwed up and the average American home has a dual income household, I'm a little nervous that I might not get to realize this dynamic of family life. Any of you have stay at home wives?
