This year I am again going to skip the local beerfest. $50 admission and a ho hum selection of beers has led me to just have my own damn party. The plan is for about 6-7 of us, 4 so far are in, to bring two six packs of a good beer that we wouldn't usually pick up as a daily. I just got back from Hilton Head Island in SC where I picked up Fat Tire, Fat Tire 1554, and Yuengling Porter. None of these beers are available here. I'm looking for good beer selections to request my friends bring, any suggestions? No Arrogant Bastard type beers, we just are not that crazy. Abita is available to us so I'm suggesting at least one pint of Oatmeal Stout. A good selection of German 'fest' beers would be nice.
My own beerfest.

Arrogant Bastard is a pretty good beer, you just have to man up and wade through the hops.
If your friends are E30 fans too see if you can find some Warsteiner. Oktoberfest or Premium Dunkel.

Stella is great beer , you can get lucky and find 12pack on sale for 11.99. have fun man, 50 to get in a beerfest is a rip off. We have Oktoberfest here and its only 20 to get in and 10bux a 40oz of spaten on tap. 3 of those and your fuckked :DComment

Not even really a "Belgian-style" beer.
Not all that special either.
Check out the "Smoke Stack Series" from Boulevard if you can get it down there. Comes in 750ml bottles, good for sharing/tasting.
I'm a particular fan of the "Tank No. 7"
Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout, Framboise (although it's not the same as on tap), anything from the Rogue breweries Dead Guy Ale and Chocolate Stout being the favorites for me.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

Not sure if you can get it in your area, but look for Shiner Bock. it's a Bavarian style beer. A perfect beer to enjoy with a meal, refreshing cold, and not so much flavor it is like eating Hops.
Its a small Texan brewery, you can try the site to see if it's in your area. http://www.shiner.com/Comment

Duvel..... It's very good tasting and is 6.8% alcohol just a bit higher than your standard american beer.. You have to buy it from a "Total Wine" type of store that stocks a lot of beer. A bit pricey but worth it.

Red Oak Battlefield Bock, local stuff from Greensboro area. Damn good.
Lone Rider Sweet Josie, local Raleigh guys. Damn good as well.
Ashville, Highland. They have a very smooth Gaelic Ale.
Blue Moon has a good IPA and wheat.
Majic Hat Number 9.
Shiner Bock is also damn good.
Dogfish IPA had some weird after taste to it.Comment

stella is overpriced shit, people only like it because the company has done a great job of promoting the idea that stella is drunk by fancy people. if you want to go that route, you're better off with Heineken.
dogfish head IPAs are great, I'm a fan of the 90 and 120 minute myself. They also have a seasonal beer called theobroma...an ancient mayan recipe (replication of, rather) flavored with cocoa and ancho chiles...Shit's good. I don't know if it's available right now. you'll propbably be able to find their punkin' ale though
Tried a beer recently by Bison Brewing, called Honey basil, and it's a really really nice sipping beer to accompany a hearty meal, sweet on the front of the tongue with a perfect amount of bitter toward the end. Hard to find though, the only place around me has it for 9.99/4pk.
I realize that none of these suggestions are very german, but they are tastyComment
