I haven't been on the Evo forums for a few years now, but I remember them being full of garbage. A lot of them were stupid kids who were into dragracing and had no idea how to properly set up and tune a real car. Basically, DSM dweebs and Mustang meatheads who bought Evos because they could make cheap power.
There were certain vendors (one that starts with the letter "B") who were basically selling junk and the forum kids were too inexperienced to recognize the shoddy build quality and poor design. So you really need to cut through a metric shit-ton of bullshit to get to any useful info.
Overall, the UK forums (especially LancerRegister) are much better.
regarding mods; these cars need VERY little to be fast and reliable. I've put 120k on my 2004 GSR and its been dead reliable. A simple MBC, tune and exhaust will net you an easy 50+whp. If you want to track it get some decent pads and good brake fluild, thats it really. Don't go crazy trying to improve on an already well built/engineered platform. Stick to the basics and learn to drive the car before you start throwing parts at it in an attempt to make it faster.

Like MikeDE said; manual boost controller. eliminates the boost taper programed into the stock EBC (electronic boost controller). Chances are pretty high your car already has one or did at one time. Its really rare to find one of these cars without the basic mods already done.

Mine just has the MR package with the stock boost gauge. I don't think it has a EBC.

Get a real boost guage(mechanical is preferable) Before installing the MBC. And while you're at it Speed Racer, get a reputable EGT(exh gas temp) gauge as well. It's very valuable for tuning and for the prevention of molten engine parts.

The EBC I was referring to is just the stock boost control solenoid, unless the PO changed to a different/aftermarket EBC (perrin, Grimspeed, ect.). I'm not a fan of EBC at all, especially the aftermarket kind. way to inconsistant and much, much harder to tune with a nice flat boost curve. MBC all the way.
the stock gauge package is ample. That is all I have on my car other than using the EVOScan PPC for logging while on track. That tool (EVOScan PPC) is worth its weight in gold if you are planning on tuning/tweaking yourself (which I recommend since these cars are very easy to tune and the whole process is very well documented on the ECUFlash forums).
Gear oil has got to be the worst automotive related smell EVER. Makes me gag every time.
+11000 x 100 fucking million
I changed the tranny fluid + front/rear diff on the WRX yesterday, got a nice face wash with it and now I cant smell anything other than burnt baby feces :hitler:
