I am more of a import > domestic. I hate domestic cars.
The Focus is a global car, it's sold in the same form all over the world. It's more of an import than many BMWs which are made in SC heavily dumbed-down-for-Americans-specs
Ford hands down and I normally hate domestics. The only problem with the focus is the terrible back seat room but in your circumstance, that probably doesn't matter. The interior is what makes it for me, it is so so much better than the Mazda. The Mazda may be better handling but how many canyons do you have to drive through on your way to work in the morning?
I looked extensively at the Veloster. But in the end I ruled it out because,
1. It's too small
2. It has a very inferior twist-beam rear suspension
3. It rides significantly rougher and louder than the others
The 6-speed is fantastic, believe me, but it wasn't worth the other sacrifices.
1. Its a dd for work, how much room does 1 person need
2. Its a dd for work, how well does it have to handle and it'll be less maintenance.
3. The only point worth noting, but it is cheaper, get better mpg, has a better warranty, and hell I think you qualify for their assurance deal with this car too.

when people car shop, they have blinders on usually and make an emotional purchase based off the facts they have with targeted bias to the car that they "want' vs "what accomplishes their needs"
ive seen people buy mustang GTs when they're shopping for a nice daily commuter
ive also seen people who want to save money on gas and paid 6k OVER sticker on a prius, which in the end will cost them more than the TDi they just traded in (i worked that deal and made a fat check)

This is a long-term car for me, i.e. 5+ years. So there's more to consider besides just me and my commute. And the twist beam axle is why #3 exists. The MPG difference is 38 vs 40, which works out to about $100/yr.
