The bottom line is that electrics are just plain cheaper to drive because you don't have to buy gas.
And compared to gasoline engines for a daily driver they are preferable in every measurable regard.
torque? instant, with most of it piled up in the low rpms.
noise? none.
throttle response? instant. perfect for TCS too.
warm up, weather effects? none.
maintenance? none.
weight? motor-wise it's far lighter and smaller for the torque. great for alyout options like 1 per wheel, or 2 in front and 1 in back, etc.
with batteries compared to gas tank and all the exhaust and intakes and crap.. not quite a sinker here.
there's also the remove transmission option.

Question: why the hell don't the electric motors have transmissions? 2 or 3 more gears could really help extend the range on those suckers

if it came with specs like that, i would have one asap.

Plug in electric cars are great, but it just moves the pollution from the exhaust pipe to the electrical power plants. At least cars have strict emission laws to keep them relatively clean. They should put some solar panels on the roof of the car to help charge it while its parked and or driving.

The power plants are operating 24/7 anyway, so in terms of carbon pollution it helps. But the mining for nickel and production/waste of the batteries is another story.

The process of refining crude oil into gasoline on its own consumes more electricity per mile than a pure EV.

There actually is a solar panel on the roof that powers the normal car battery for the radio and all that stuff

I think this generation of electrics is necessary to get the supporting infrastructure built, to gain public acceptance and to teach the automakers how to make a really bitchin' next generation of electrics. My total commute is 30 miles, I do it by bicycle 60% of the time. I would be into electric when BMW offers a fun to drive, inexpensive nice looking car that doesn't stop half way up a hill...

I really don't like nissan, but I don't think I would be able to buy a volt because I still have not forgiven chevy for what they did to the ev1.

But I would really love owning an electric car.

I don't think electric cars the the solution to pollution, but I do think they are a step forward in lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. Electricity can be made so many ways without using oil that it is only logical to make electric cars.

Now they just need to make more cars like the Tesla and less like the leaf.

I was actually involved in a project in high school where we designed and built a solar "tree". It was basically a way for someone to have solar panels in front of their house, but make it more attractive. We had six 120watt panels mounted on a steel tree with a 400 watt wind turbine at the top. Then there was a battery bank designed to be buried underground near by that it would charge, along with a diesel generator that could run on biofuel. The idea was it was charge the batteries during the day while you were at work so at night your car could charge.
