educate me on hdtvs

Ok so i am completely out of the technology loop, i just bought a PS3 a month or so ago, i know im LATE to the party eh?
Needless to say, i have one of the old bubble screen TVs, i cant see crap because it apparently wasnt designed for this new technology, and on a friends HDTV it is beyond crystal clear.

So i started shopping around and man TVs are expensive, i have a 19 inch tv which is way bigger than the mid 20s flat screen HDTVs that im looking at....those things are tiny for my budget :(
I think id definitely need at least a 30" flatscreen otherwise id be straining my eyes to look at things.

Am i better off waiting to the day after thankgiving sales since its close? I dont really watch a lot of tv, just like family guy and stuff, but what should i look for out? I see 1080 and 720 tvs but have no clue what they are, i just want my PS3 to be played how it was meant to be played.

Any tips on best places to buy them or general info is appreciated.

Why PS3? Xbox and Forza 4 is where it is at.

Anyways you want a hdtv with built in tuner 1080p resolution and led back lit display. Everything else probably wont matter to you, the more hardcore people will have a missive list but for the average joe who just wants a new tv that is all you will need.

Here in AUS I can get a Samsung 42" smart TV for about $1200, this is 1080p led display. With a built in computer to surf the web and shit like that.

Oh and if you like sports or 3D you will want a TV with 120hz not 60hz

FWIW my HDTV is a 32" and is only 720p without any of that fancy pants LED backlighting shit and PS3 looks AMAZING on it. You can get a similar model at Walmart for about $350

Normally I wouldn't recommend buying from walmart, but here you go... Hannspree is a pretty well known quality monitor manufacturer.

Less than32" = 720p
Bigger = 1080p

You want the biggest 1080 p you can afford
The ps3 is the best blue ray player too and you need 1080p to get the bene's of blue ray

If your budget is tight, then your not going to get more then a 32" which is not that bad a size if your used to a 19".

there is a 32 inch dynex at best buy for 230 on sale 720p ( at this size 1080p is a waste in my opinion)

for the record i have this TV. It is more then fine for the price and I paid 300 canadian for it .I've had mine for a year and it's are fine.

The image quality is very good for the price.

If its just in your room 32 inch would be fine and within your budget(unless your room is massive and you are 20 feet form your tv). Plus you can always put it elsewhere later when you have the cash for a huge tv.
Anyhow I dont think you can go cheaper/quality then that.

It is all about viewing distance. I say anything under 42 is tough to deal with in a living room setting.

720P is not that big a limitation for normal watching, but some stuff really needs it. Those that say "gotta have LED, gotta have 1080p, gotta have 120Hz" are "INTO" this stuff, you are obviously not. I say for the few hours a month you watch, fuck it. Get a $650 50" 720P plasma and be done. Panasonic has great image quality (even in 720p), excellent black levels (LED backlight can suck it, black is most important to me) and nice fluid motion, especially compared to cheaper LCDs...but a freaking HUGE TV is easier to watch.

If you go out comparing, do keep in mind that the sales houses have all the levels pumped up on whatever TV has the most profit. Make all the settings match before you watch anything.

Plasmas get burn in rather easily and aren't the best for video games. They do have an amazing contrast ratio for movies though. Pay attention to contrast ratios when buying, your blacks will be blacker and you'll get a better color range. 720p will be enough at your budget and screen size. Don't buy Vizio they are absolute crap. Buy from someplace reputable so that if you have to warranty it for a dead pixel or something it won't be hard.
edit: also don't let ANYONE sell you expensive cables. 100% of retail cables are a ripoff. Monoprice.com for all your cabling needs.

Not anymore. All plasmas built in the last couple of years move the image just a few pixels every few seconds...you can't tell, it is very subtle...but it pretty much stops all burn in.

Plasma's don't burn in any easier than my MPVA panel does...

But yes, stay AWAY from vizio. They have more input lag than I thought was possible.
