The 1M/M235i are the same way, paddle shifter exhaust = ass, 6 speed = hot.
But I agree, it has something to do with the injection and fuel cutoff with the shifting. Are there any videos of them with WOT top gear?

Well, I got a wild hair and started last night. I've been thinking about it a long time. This poor thing has been sitting for like 7 years. I got bumped into at a stop sign, folded up the trunk lid. Body shop spent a year looking for a lid, then decided to have their metal genius repair it.
There were rust bubbles showing in the arches and rockers, so we put on new rear arches, rear lower quarters, and rebuilt the rocker panels under the doors. Then one day I stopped in to check on it and the nose was all primered......uh, I know it's pointy at both ends but we're working on the back, right? They wouldn't tell me exactly what happened, but I think someone backed up into the nose inside the shop. Old putty fell off, they had to fix it. At least that was all on their nickel.
So I ended up with a completely painted car, which was nice. After 2 1/2 years sitting mostly outside, they did a nice paint job, but the top faded from black to light grey. All the systems were 40 years old and original. I decided not to drive it again and towed it to my garage, where it's been since. Busy, work, kids, no money, other car projects, etc.
So I don't trust the brake system or any rubber or the fuel system or any of it. It was incredibly reliable when I drove it every day in the rain in Seattle. Now everything is old and hard.
So, first is new suspension - springs, bushings, ball joints, tie rods, sway bar bushings, steering, rear trailing arms and link bushings, axle straps, etc.
(Reman.) calipers, hoses, master cyl, hard lines, rubber lines, fittings. Upgraded Ate calipers and front uprights from a newer spider. Later model LS rear axle assembly with Ate calipers.
Clean the fuel tank, change soft lines, filters (has that cool glass bowl fuel filter), and rebuild the Webers (Yike - THAT will be a learning curve)
Later model front hubs with bigger wheel bearings, bigger brakes.
I think I have a rear main seal leak, so if I pull that apart I should do the clutch and flywheel. New motor mounts. Rebuild driveshaft carrier, giubo driveline donut, u-joints.
Engine is covered in body shop dust and oil. Exhaust needs to be re-hung. Needs trans and shifter rubber boots replaced.
I was having a great time re-learning where everything is and where to start, and it dawned on me...shit, this is a 50 year old car! Not just my old sports car that needs a something replaced here and there.
I felt like a little old Italian mechanic fiddling with wrenches - a socket didn't fit, a box end wouldn't fit.....so I'm left with coaxing these little bolts with a tiny open end wrench, 1/2 turn at a time.

Good to hear you are working on getting it back on the road. One step at a time. Your car is 50, mine is pushing 60 and was far more neglected than yours. If you pull the clutch and flywheel, you might look into a lightweight one. What sort of springs and shocks are you going to run? If lowering the car, you might want some Bilsteins to help offset the compromised roll center, especially up front. The later model LSD rear end was one of the best upgrades I did on the GTV. Going from the 4.56 rear end to the 4.10 made the car so much better to drive.
