these things look pretty fun to mess around with. What's the minimal budget needed to get one of these things?

IDK? This thread is from 5 years ago, http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=100871 It made 8 pages. Plus i've seen multiple threads on R/Cs on here over the years.

It can't hurt to start a thread, I've got a couple rc's as well. Debating an HPI RS4 EVO now after seeing e30_pare's car. I miss my old revo 2.5.

Budget is what the hobby is about. There's so many factors into what effects price.

          Nitro/electric
          On/off road
          Drift/touring car/rally
          Buggy/monster truck/short course/crawler
          Scale (1/10, 1/12, 1/8, etc)

Best place to start if your on a budget is Craigslist. I'd do research before u pull the trigger. Range anywhere from beginner to advanced

Some rc's r better than others when it comes to availability, hop ups, spare parts.

I definitely agree with this. I started out with a revo 2.5 originally and I've got way too much into it, converting it to the longer chassis and an electric conversion. Whereas if you do the research and know what you want to start with, you could save a lot of money in the long run.

Also depends on how you treat equipment. I got my step kids ( 10 year olds) off road trucks two years ago and they have been broken more than running.

They tend to drive too fast and misjudge corners which result in front ends getting ripped off.

Budget? depends on type of power. Nitro, brushless, brushed motors and who is selling them. Radios and speed controllers are priced pretty good these days.

My nitros are still busted :(

Motors are all blown, spur gears shredded, bent chassis', clutches burnt out. Sigh* money pits. Usually cheaper to just buy more used running cars for parts then spending 10-50$ at a time fixing small parts. When I can get a whole car for 150$ sometimes with tons of extras

^ That's why you go brushless lipo, they just work, and blow the doors off of nitro.

                    Yea that's y I just switched to a brushless lipo chassis. :D

Done with nitro. Electric is the future for me. Charge & go. If I buy enough batteries I can play for days

I'm still on the fence. I enjoy the tinkering of the nitro, and it was what I grew up on, but there's no where to race anymore. My old Traxxas 2.5 which I rebuilt and ran a tank through before I decided to go with a OS.18tm but now it needs a rebuild, and there's no where to run.

I'm running a losi 22b with a velineon and turnigy nano 5800 2c, one in the car and one on the charger. only about 10 minutes downtime between packs, which is perfect to let the motor cool.

BTW, check out WWW.hobbyking.com for batteries. Shipping is sloth-like, but the prices can't be beat.

I grew up on nitro too, I wanted to stick to it, but once you see what the electric cars can do now, with a fraction of the hassle, it's hard to go back.

I used one strictly nitro to, but electric is just where it's at. Low mess, low maintenance, all fun.

More more buying fuel or glow plugs. I love it. I still love my nitro, but it's a shelf queen now.

Yeah, I've also got a XXX-cr with a brushless setup, as well as a 2wd slash running brushless. They just aren't the same though, it's great I can pull them out and run, but I miss the tinkering.

Anyone play with E-Revo's or brushless monster trucks? Any suggestions for motors?

e30_pare, you'll love the lipo setup, they are a lot of fun and output is way better than a ni-cad battery.
