Speaking as a professional mechanic, the right thing for him to do is to not charge you for his poor diagnosis and un-needed repairs. If you wanted to compromise because you did get some new parts and to possibly salvage the relationship, paying his cost for the new parts received would be the next step but that would would be a decision from your heart, not your brain. I'm usually on the mechanic's side of things but this guy can go fuck himself. Car needing a wheel bearing and thermostat should be done the SAME DAY, period.
