So, what camera should I get?

I've been looking at some better cameras to replace my 3.2mp video camera/camera. I found a couple 5.1mp's, and a sweet 7mp (Canon). Any companys I should stay away from? The ones I looked at were either Nikons, Canon or Sony. I'm not looking at the huge expensive ones with huge zooms, just something in the $350-550 range. Any recommendations?
