NO, same with rovers NO, Unless they are 25 years old or older then we can import them, but by the time you have done that and restored it to good DD status you are looking at 40k and might as well have bought New or very gently used Tahoe.

750: Umm yeah sure, I live where we get 100"+ of snow a year in the valley and triple that just up the mountain 1500 feet or so. It sticks around till april most years and longer in the back country where I spend a lot of my time when I am home. My rigs are not mall crawlers, but nice try though.

So I figured. Although I'm not sure why anyone would want a rover, as they are by far some of the most unreliable vehicles I have ever seen. Especially ones that came with BMW m51, which has got to be the worst diesel engine ever created.(and I'm serious, they should be avoided at all costs)

Why would anyone would ever want a 99%-FWD suv is beyond me. Look it up.

In slippery conditions it is one of the worst handling cars I have driven. I can see how inexperienced driver on snow/ice could wrap it around a tree in matter of minutes.

Agreed for those of us in Northern Climates yeah FWD biased SUV's suck ass, you would have to pay me to drive a FWD in the winter and pay me well. But Op is way down in Southern CA, if it starts snowing and iceing up there a ton, it means Al Gore was way off base.

No I am not talking newer I am talking old school pure mechanical injected Defenders, about as reliable as stone and easier to work on.

The guy you're quoting is from Northwestern Montana...you know, snowy, Rocky mountains, near Canada...

In Louisiana (and California, like the thread starter's origin) they're essentially weekend toys at best but in the Pacific Northwest four wheel driving is mandatory on certain freeways, mountain overpasses, and just plain getting around town for shopping a significant portion of the year. The US is just too large and diverse to make a cookie cutter argument about vehicles, weather, and terrain in my opinion.

You're Z3 is an obvious sign you don't travel with kids. Stop hugging the tree and realize people like SUVs.

If I want a fun ride I will get out the convertible. Though my Flex Limited puts a smile on my face too....
going to guess you missed the part about buy a wagon?

As much as louisiana is where I live Wisconsin is home. Born in Dodgeville, grew up in the country outside of Shiocton. Drive in the snow/ice all weather. While we may not have the size hills of nw Montana we have our share of step grades to make up and down. 90% of the family still in Wisconsin. Guess what, not an SUV or AWD in the family. Did not have one when I was living there. We make it to work/shopping/getting around no matter the weather.

Even though your family does not have one does not render them useless for everyone else in the country.

You sound like a big boy so I should't have to drag this out any farther than it already has been.

I will note a few key differences as I have been to the SW part of WI yes you live in HILL country. I say hills because thats what they are, you elevation changes are a couple of hundred feet and you dont have very many places with road grades more than 4%. Also in the winter your state and county DOT do this neat thing called PLOW, you guys get 90% of your roads cleared every time it snows.

Where I live we have MOUNTAINS and elevation changed are measured in 1000's of feet at times (all though the valley is fairly flat in and of it self) there is couple of hundred feet of elevation change from house to house depending on where you live if your on the edges or north end of the valley. only 2 roads get plowed to bare pavement when it snows here and thats the main highways. The rest just get beaten into hard pack ICE. trust me 4x4 is necessary here as are studs if you live outta town. unless you live in the heart of town and never need to venture out of it 7 months a year. Depending on where you live ave snowfall around the valley ranges from 60" - 110" a year that far exceeds most of WI record snowfall totals a year. I grew up in MI and the way the roads are cared for in the winter is like night and day, even the UP of MI gets better road maintenance that where I live now in the winter time .

I had a wagon. Two Actually . Was looking into a Forrester...pending your input and approval of course...but it was too small too.

The only thing missing is your understanding. Your commentary is not needed nor helpful. You are on a soapbox. We are trying to help the OP.

and congratulations on your story. You sound amazing.

Now, that I think about it - can you guys get it with diesel? Its slow as shit but gets awesome mileage. As I understand place where OP lives gets no snow at all? If a was looking for economical mid sized SUV, without need for true 4x4, that could be one of my choices.

Actually can you guys get anything in that category with a good diesel engine? X3? VW? Anything?

                            NO

The only diesels we have here, are the Truck engines form the big 3, the VW TDI in the Jetta (I cant remember if we got the big on in the tourages sp. or not) , the BMW 3.0 TDI, Merc, I think has one and Jeep is using it in limited numbers.

Diesel is a hated fuel in the US and our EPA/Govt has them all but regulated outta existence, hence the HUGE premium price we pay to get a diesel in ANYTHING, and why the mileage on diesels has gone to shit in the last 5 years.

I'd avoid the X3 - ever seen Clarkson's review on them? On the other hand, the E53 X5 is awesome, and if you get an M54, then you'll have similar fuel economy. But they ride better and are more spacious. I have a 2003 X5 3.0i and have been loving it. I don't have kids but needed something I could throw my road bike into the back of, haul a snowmobile, etc. Babies are smaller than either of those, so I'd estimate I could probably haul at least 37 babies if needed.
