Not out of spite, but curiousity.
Can you point out any bad reviews or places that point out the flaws? I've found nothing but good things.

I was hesitant at first because I've never heard of Hi standard...

    EDIT:
Well shit. A bushmaster is the same price, with a shitty red dot sight, but is plastic and not all metal. (Personally indifferent on the last aspect, I like light)

I've shot Mini 14's, AR's AK's, and my share of bolt actions. I absolutely love the Mini 14 - it is a plenty capable platform, but if you are looking for customization, it is not going to be your system of choice. I would suggest an AR.

... on another note I decided to get a CMMG Quebec-A at the next gun show in feburary if they have one. If not I'll probably save up and purchase one. I was in the market for a tactical 22lr since I wanted something dirt cheap to shoot and just a fun plinking gun - but I truly want an AR, it's just not in the budget at the moment. the CMMG Q-a has a mil-spec lower and a 22lr dedicated upper - i.e. I can put a true 5.56 upper on that bad boy in the future and shoot real round when I need to :)

    WOW!

I'm going through the same process.

But I'm kind of dead set on an AR. I never had a reason to buy one before, but this morning 1000 .223 FMJ rounds I won in a contest came in...
So now I DO have at least an excuse.
So many decisions though... Never really seriously looked at AR's

So far I'm kinda liking the Hi standard HSA-15... But this is only 1 to 2 hours of basically browsing. Looks to be extremely versatile, interchangeable, and quality with the best of them.

Looks to fit the bill you're looking at too.

Browning .308 Bolt Action my vote as well. Very solid rifle. Many 4 and 6 points loss there lives to this gun. :)

The m6a2 is something I had not considered, but does look desirable. The spiral barrel looks... interesting to say the least, but it does seem like a good base for what I want to outfit. I'm basically looking for a larger assault rifle with retractable stock but still able to take out for longer range practice(100-300yards)/home defense. Which is also why I want something in a 16" barrel. M1A is out of the question(as nasty as it is). To outfit it the way I'd like it, I'd spend 2 grand easily. Id like stay wothin budget. Unless I recycle brass, I think anything .308 may be out of the question, too. The more I look at it, an AR platform looks better and better. AK is still an option but I hate the recoil on them.

Semi Auto either an AR15 or the 308 version of one. But your price would have to go up if you are looking at the 308 version.

Brands to look into... LMT, LWRC, Larue, Colt

Bolt Action 308 Remington 700 5R if you can find one.

Semi 308, M1 Grand or M1a not the Mini 14.

You can get an upper from lwrc for 1000 to 1100 for a m6a2. Then build your own lower.

    This.

I got a Russian for $300 a few years ago. It is simply the most fun gun to play with. Durable, easily cleaned, disassembled, etc.

Sure, ammo is a but $$$, but gun shows help keep that cost reasonable.

If you're looking for semi auto go with either an AR-10 or AR15.

My favorite gun is a military grade Browning .308 Bolt Action

The sig 516 is great! But if you are looking for something with tons of parts I would get an ar15. I have two LWRC's right now and have never had any problems. This is after 6000+ rounds through each of them.
