Psssh. I like a watch I don't mind getting a little dirty and will always be able to be fixed by the dude in the shoe shop.

I have one like this,
Have used for the past 5 year. It gets beat around at work. As much as I have to wash my hands it stands up well. The crystal still not scratched. Some wear noted on the band. The only problem is the battery seems to only last about a year and a half.
Now this is what I really want. Will have a Breitling one day.

I am here to help. What are you looking for in the way of USE DD so to speak or something dressy. Or something more AC/DC that will swing either way??
You want more sporty, or more classic??
I see you have figured on dropping some decent coin on something. Well whats your price range you are wanting to keep it close too??? My recommendation is a good Auto movement from a more traditional maker as opposed to a fashion company, fyi quartz have no soul and as we established with "leaf" movados are for douchebags . A chronograph will have more dials and features and will work as a good stop watch as well. A chronometer is a watch that meets the international standards for accuracy which is +4 -6 seconds a day.
For more entry level auto divers you cant beat a sub 200 - 300 dollar Seiko with 7s26 movement in it. Dont let anyone shit you that sekio's are not as good as the swiss, Seiko's auto movements are all in house, and the 7s26 is nearly as reliable as stone (I have been rocking a SKX 007 for almost 2 years daily and it holds to about 2 mins a month). Though your going to be more limited to a traditional divers style watch with those, but thats not all bad as they can dress up or down for a good all round watch.
Jump to the 500-1200 range both AD or gray market, and your looking at getting into Most of Oris's line up, which is great value for the money, they use Swiss ETA base movements and then mod them as they like, as dose Hamilton, Marathon, and a few others. Anything you find that you like the looks of you are going to have great watch. Hammie, will have something for any occasion in their line up from Black tie only to casual in the Jazz master Collection which is more traditional styling. Then in the Khaki collection you have the traditional tool watch that is what has been issued to filed troops around the world for 70 years, but there are many more sporty and some modern styles as well. Marathon is the ultimate tool watch in a divers style. Oh and dont forget Tag's, I personally not big on tags as every baler wanna be has a tag, and they make way to many quartz.
Next up you have the 1500-5000k range this will put you into almost anything. Omega is my fav maker, and I love the Speedy pros, aka "the moon watch", as they have some history to them. The Speedy pro you can buy right now Ref number 3750.50.00 (has the plastic not sapphire crystal) that is Hand wound only (not a auto but still a purely mechanical movement) is still the very same watch and ONLY watch used by NASA for EVA's and only one flight qualified for nasa as well. Also only watch to ever have been warn on the moon. There are many options in the speed master line as well for differant tastes but imo the full size Speedy pros are the best even if you the the display back and saph crystal.
Rollies, Britelling, Omega, are going to be your big 3, in this price range, and as far as the divers go, omega Planet Oceans and Rollie Sea dwellers are still used by some off shore oil rig divers/welders in stock from to time dives. You can find something for any style or occasion form any of these guys and they will hold value well. On a side note Sinn makes a very good watch in this range, all though not too many style choices and may not be very versatile as a single watch.
5k and up, your still going to find a few of the last 3 we talked about but this is more IWC, Pannari, and many other makers I am not as familiar with. Oh there is a watch maker here local to me in Montana Bozeman watch company, that makes limited runs in each style, that are as good as anything else from anywhere, but they are 6k and up. Hell even Seiko has a couple of autos that MSRP north of 6k
this is just announced IWC I have a huge hard on for but msrp is prolly going to be north of 8k
I know I have just kinda glazed over most everything here, if you have any more specific questions, let me know. I am by no means a expert just a hobbyist but I will answer as best I can. I left a ton of basic info out but can cover it if you need me too.Last edited by mrsleeve; 01-28-2012, 05:07 AM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

Price range is $600-800.
Probably more toward sporty. Don't need anything dressy. I wear jeans/polo or button up shirt to work with sneakers.
And we usually don't go anywhere for dinner that jeans/polo won't work either.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

Hammi or Oris would be what I would be looking at. You can find something great for that price range from them. Both new gray market, and in good condition used.
Ebay really is a good source for watches as well.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

a nice 44mm pam luminor homage will set you back between 80-150 for starters.
pams are very versatile watches, they go with a suit or with jeans and a tee, im actually wearing one of my pams for casual friday.
check out this guys stuff, i have one of his watches and it's not bad for a daily beater.
and despite the low price, the watches run on the 6947 movement which is practically bulletproof. the cool part is, it's a mechanical hand wind watch rather than an automatic, meaning about every 40 hours you'll have to wind it to keep it going. to some its a downside, to me it's just another cool part of having a different watch.
once you go mechanical, it's hard to go back to a quartz
ps. pam is short for Panerai. The m is derived from the nomenclature of the watch meaning Panerai Model ###Last edited by Gr00v3; 01-27-2012, 02:33 PM.

also to: if you do get into the pam world, you'll quickly get sucked into the strap world. the great thing about pams are that the straps are so easily changed and because of that it fits into so much variety.
our very own OG TJ/Digitalwave runs a watch strap shop at www.crownandbuckle.com
i personally own 4 or 5 of his leather straps for my pams and like 30 nato straps for my rolex
