who has knowledge of old toyota trucks and SBC's

I have acquired an 88 Toyota pickup 5speed from my grandmother last year. It was my grandfathers but after he died from cancer it just sat. He took great care if it. The truck beds on these trucks were notorious for rusting. It sat in a heated garage clean and rusted more..its bad. I want to redo everything because it has sentimental value to me. I plan on finding a new truck bed (nearly impossible) and wheels/suspension/repaint whole nine yards. It has a small i-4 and it lost all its power. I can't find anything on the web about swapping a small block in place. I wouldn't know where to begin hooking up the 4wd as well. I would be so lost. Anyone have any idea about all this? I have swapped an m50 into my e30 several times so I have some knowledge. Thanks in advance.

Ill also take any tips or ideas what to do to the truck. Ill upload pictures later of said truck.

The truck is 100% how I got it from my grandmother. The ugly (TOYOTA) on the windshield was from the guy stuck in his teens my aunt bought it from. random guy sold to my aunt, aunt sold it to my grandfather, grandfather passed away so grandmother gave it to me.

I have a lot of plans for this truck but money is not with me right now, I got a little over my head in bills and live paycheck to paycheck. When money does come my way, I plan on making this truck perfect.

I had an '89 4runner, which was basically a truck then with a bench and a shell.
It had the v6 in it and it was more difficult to work on than the 22re and expensive to rebuild. It has more power than the 4, but not enough to justify the gas penalty...and these are thoughts from when I owned it in the mid 90's. Gas prices are I think nearly double what they were then.

These days, you're probably better off going with a small V8 or a Tacoma 3.4 over the 3.slow. I haven't been there for over a decade but along with the pirate4x4 you could also check out yotatech.

If you need an alternator or want a spare let me know because I actually just bumped my toe on the one I pulled out when I upgraded it with a stronger one. I can't remember the mod, I think it was from a late 90's car. Man I wish I could help you there but I almost bet it's on pirate4x4 if that's the site I think I'm remembering. I needed a stronger one because I had a ridiculous stereo system (in my 20's what can I say) but the mod was common to provide mass power to wenches and lights and all kinds of stuff.

Although, search that number because it's entirely possible I put the stock one back on before selling it and kept this one that was the mod.

If you've got a moonroof I've got the shade that clips into it, too. It started out tan and I believe I painted it black but I'd have to dig it out. I might have given it to someone over the years but if I have it neither are doing me any good so if you need them might as well figure something you think is fair and PM me.


I had to get rid of mine when I moved back home from Oregon to Irvine. I rebuilt it from the inside out, stood there breathing over the machinist while he did the work. But it wouldn't pass smog when I brought it to California and I didn't have the patience to deal with it anymore after dropping I think around 4K on the rebuild. My dad drove it back up to Oregon and sold it to some kid and I used the money to buy my cabrio.

Anyway, I don't think any of that really helped you other than to say do some real searching around before you decide on what to drop in there because there's lots of opinions on the what works best in a toy.

I'll say this, for every type of car I've owned, whether it be Datsun (pickup then later a z), Mopar (couple darts, 47 plymouth, plus about 6 buddies' in the club), Toyota (4runner), and BMW (couple e30's and the e34 I got my buddy into) in-lines are generally easier to work on, cheaper to maintain, and often regarded as bulletproof compared to the V siblings. But for whatever reasons Toyota seems to have earned a particular troublesome rep in regards to it's smaller V's.

edit: I tried to google that number and didn't come up with anything so I started poking around and if I'm remembering correctly the alternator I put in there was a high output from an MR2. I'm going to my storage unit tomorrow to pick some parts up for other members so I'll grab any other numbers I can off that one and let you know which one it is.

I'm jealous, dude. My uncle had your year and we used to toss the boards in the back and surf swami's full moons. I thought he was going to sell it to me when he was done but I was living in Oregon at the time. That's why when I saw the 4R on the lot I bought it on the spot.

I don't know PA, but if you got things to climb you're going to have a ton of fun with that Toy no matter what you put in it :)

I would go with joshes suggestion of digging around on Pirate, as you will find many guys that have done that swap over there for sure.

I have been looking for a way to deal with rust on a car that I am working on. I saw this on youtube. If you have space it might be a way to save and re panel parts of the bed.

Wish I had known about that molasses trick before I polished one of my 1850's straightedges.

I looked into it some more and apparently you need to use the raw molasses, not the stuff you buy off the shelf, and it should be available in 5 gallon buckets at your local feed store.

Great truck to start a build with. I would not recommend a V8 swap, the only ones I have ever seen have required a remote mount radiator that ended up in the bed. The 22RTE was kind of a slug, only made a bit more horsepower and was not worth the extra headache. A 22RE will pull you anywhere you want to go with the right gearing, I was never anything but impressed with the way those little motor can go. Pirate4x4 is a great resource, I would check out http://www.marlincrawler.com/ as well, they have been building top quality Toyota parts for a long time and have a good reputation. Check out the solid axle swap, transfer case doubler and some new R&P, that would put you right on the way to having a serious off road truck.
