Thanks for the info. But I was going to do a different turbo setup, I just mainly wanted the exhaust manifold. I don't think it would be too sluggish with all seals replaced and a rebuilt volvo turbo.Great truck to start a build with. I would not recommend a V8 swap, the only ones I have ever seen have required a remote mount radiator that ended up in the bed. The 22RTE was kind of a slug, only made a bit more horsepower and was not worth the extra headache. A 22RE will pull you anywhere you want to go with the right gearing, I was never anything but impressed with the way those little motor can go. Pirate4x4 is a great resource, I would check out http://www.marlincrawler.com/ as well, they have been building top quality Toyota parts for a long time and have a good reputation. Check out the solid axle swap, transfer case doubler and some new R&P, that would put you right on the way to having a serious off road truck.
I would love to, i'd probably twist the frame. As well as I wouldn't know how to get the 4wd hooked up, if even possible without crazy modifications.
EDIT: If I am doing 70 down the highway in this truck and I get to a hill it bogs down and drops to 60 MPH and won't go above it, even if I shift to the lowest gear I can. I think the 4cyl is on its way out, which is why I wanted to swap it. But that 4wd setup is the issue, I don't want to lose it.

Just rebiuild the factory motor, easy peasy japaneasy lol. Toyota trucks are literally the easiest trucks i've ever wrenched on aside from rust issues. Id leave the rust in the rear bed quarters alone, and just drive it til the bumper or bed falls off. They run forever.
edit: oh and post pics im curious to exactly what you're dealing with now.sigpicComment

I didn't see you mention this, but I did see you say it sat for a long time, so you may have some things going on inside the engine. Did you change out all the normal maintenance stuff? plugs, cap/rotor, oil, coolant, air filter?EDIT: If I am doing 70 down the highway in this truck and I get to a hill it bogs down and drops to 60 MPH and won't go above it, even if I shift to the lowest gear I can. It sat for a long time, but when my grandmother could build up the courage to take the truck out, she would. Grandfather loved that truck and whenever my grandmother would drive it she would get upset. She started it up and let it run a few times a month just to get it everything circulating through the motor. She'd take it around the block and get it inspected every year even though she never took it anywhere besides around the block to get it all going.

As for the latest pics, its insane dirty unther the hood.. Checked the air filtre?
There are several companies in the us that sell rust free beds for old Toyotas. Theres a company up here in Norway who make a living from importing them, think theyr on pirate4x4..

I've seen a few for 1k+, none cheaper. I don't mind one that needs a little work, just need one that has no rust.

If you want to remain purist, you can rebuild the 22RE. If you're cool with doing engine work yourself, have a machine shop check your head, and block for all the common bits, then buy a rebuild kit from engnblder. He offers the most knowledge and quality parts for the best price around.
If you want more power in your truck than a fresh 22RE can provide then the Chevy 4.3 is a very good option. It doesn't require any radiator relocation, firewall or tunnel work. You need to modify your wiring a little bit and purchase a bell housing adapter and it'll bolt right up to your transmission.
About your bed, either be willing to spend some real money on a period correct new or used replacement (also avail in FG) or swap on a 3rd generation 89+ bed which can be found rust free.
It's been said before but yes, do your research on pirate4x4.com.
Read the "bible" there and don't post a question like yours there unless you want to see how loving and open minded r3vlimited is :p
If it matters my credentials: rebuilt 22R, rebuilt 22RE, rebuilt 3VZE, built 83 crawler, built 85 crawler. Trail closures == dirt bike now.
Good luck, if you take care of it, it'll last and last.88 325ix, 72 Type 1, 81 StarletComment
