Facebook, you're pretty good, but how do you know?

So Facebook just suggested that I friend someone to whom I sold something awhile back. Transaction with smoothly, and I don't care if we are friends on Facebook but how does it know that I even know this person when:

    1. We don't have a single mutual friend.

    2. I've never done a Facebook search on this person.

    3. I've never e-mailed this person. Even if I did e-mail this person, I wouldn't have used the e-mail account (an .edu) associated with my Facebook for that business purpose.

    4. The only thing I did was call his cell phone number which was posted on his WTB classifieds thread on a forum. My cell phone (that I used to call him) is linked to my Facebook account.

    Is it #4?

    P.S. No, I didn't add him...yet.

It could be a combination of your location being close to his and visited websites and interests being similar.
Facebook knows every website you visit by the tracking cookies it stores on your computer. That's one of the factors on how it determines the targeted ads. For example, I get ads on facebook (when I don't have ad block on) for BMW related stuff because facebook gets the websites I visit via cookies.
As far as the location, facebook could get that from the location you have listed on your profile and his profile. BUT, even if you don't have that listed or never gave facebook any location info, facebook can still get your current location that you are logged on at from your IP address.

You both have Facebook mobile and you called him? Kind of seems like a stretch but, plausible.

Maybe it's a combination of the Facebook mobile and cookies? But then I would think I'd get more of these friend recommendations since I'm a car guy who sells car stuff to other local car people on car forums who have cell phones and use Facebook mobile.

I had my neighbor pop up as a suggested friend.

The only contact I've ever had w/ this dude is via my gmail account from emails he sent to the HOA. So is facebook trolling my gmail?

Same shit here, a woman who is a project manager for a client came up. I conversed with her but only through my work accounts and none of that is linked to facebook.

You would be surprised at what information is out there about you and who sells that info to who.
