    Right to bear arms!

I can't decide which one, does anyone have any experince with these bad boys? I went to the stores that carry each and spoke to people who used them, and got the pros and con's but tomorrow I go to make my purchase and I just thought it'd get some last minute advice.

    Remington 710:

    [ link ]
CALIBER: .270 Win., .30-'06 Sprg. (tested)
ACTION TYPE: center-fire, bolt-action repeating rifle
RECEIVER: non-stressed steel with molded synthetic bolt guide insert
    FINISH: matte black
    OVERALL LENGTH: 42"
BARREL: 22" carbon steel, press-fit to receiver
RIFLING: conventional, six-groove, 1:10" RH twist
WEIGHT: 8 lbs., 41/2 ozs. (with scope)
SIGHTS: Bushnell 3-9X40 mm Sharpshooter scope, no metal sights
    MAGAZINE: detachable, four-round, staggered-column
    TRIGGER: single-stage, 43/4 lbs. pull
STOCK: molded gray synthetic: length of pull, 131/2"; drop at heel, 11/16"; drop at comb, 1/2"
ACCESSORIES: ISS key, Bushnell 3-9X Sharpshooter scope, scope rings, scope base, lens covers
    SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $425

    Howa 1500 Lightning:

    [ link ]
    Supplied by: Highland Sports
    Calibre: .308
    Weight: 5lbs (bare)
    Magazine Capacity: Four
    Stock: Polymer
Scope (as tested): Nikko Stirling Diamond // 4.5-14 x 50
    Score: 17 - Best Value
Comments: The Howa was a surprise package. All reviewers liked it and eventually voted it as the best all-around value for money. The stainless barrel, which was easy to clean, impressed the reviewers. Stainless steel barrels are rust resistant and require less work during the cleaning process.
The trigger had some initial ‘creep’ but this disappeared after numerous firings. Like the Remington, the Howa rifle performed well with most of the hunting ammo and very well with the match grade. Recoil was a factor but it shot best when a firm grip was taken.
    Price: $469

Savage. The accutrigger is supposed to be the best trigger on the market until you get into super expensive custom rigs.

I have a Remington 700 in .243, basically the same thing as the 710 except for the fixed magazine; its accurate, but the ammo is too expensive to shoot a lot, so I'd rather have a .308 or .223. Between my dad and I, we have everything from .17HMR to his 300H&H Mag.

What are you buying this for?

FWIW- Pistols are much more fun:p

Im with Rob on the Savage. The bolts are loose and sloppy but their barrels have always been good for a $300 gun. If you get an accutrigger model they have a decent trigger to boot.

Stay as far away as you can from the 710. Rob, it has nothing in common with the 700 or the Model 7. Its an enclosed action with a polymer liner to make the bolt appear tighter and it uses a polymer firing pin/mainspring housing. Plastic isnt all bad but I dont want it anywhere near that thin OR on a friction surface.

The 700, however, is a decent gun. I doubt you are going to find an unfired 700adl as cheap as a Savage kit though. If you could afford it get the 700adl and buy the Nikon ProStaff scope for it. Its a hell of a lot better than the scopes they put on kit guns and you cant shoot what you cant see.

Remington is really going to shit, now they are going to try to supplement themselves by bringing in Russian (Spartan) guns. Rednecks are cheap but the union ones will look down on that.
              Im now E30less.

it really depends on what you plan on shooting.

                  type of game (if any)?
                  protection?
just buying it because you can?

                      that's right, I'm wrong again.

strictly targets? Get a ruger 10/22 and have fun. Not much sense is paying for a hunting caliber to kill paper. I you need range, look into .17HMR or .223/5.56mm

even better, I'm really digging the Rhineland Arms R22, folks on Rimfire Central have been getting great results, a few MOA targets, which is great for a 10/22 based rifle, and it looks sweet to boot...

yeah that's my next purchase, although it'll be a legal 16", the $200 SBR paperwork is a lot of ammo, but I digress
