    Official Fish Tank thread

So I did a bit of searching and found nothing really dedicated threads for fish tanks. So here it is!

My 50g live planted aquarium w/co2 injection.
I currently have 4 Discus, a school of Cardinals, Rummy Nose and Ember Tetras, Tiger Pleco, Clown Loach and Coolie loaches. Enjoy!

OP should clean up a heater core and use it as the center piece in the fish tank.

Carbon dioxide is what you exhale. Plants dig it.

Freshwater tanks don't really do much for me. Saltwater is where it's at.
I've been in the hobby for more than 10 years now, since I was in 8th grade. Never had a freshwater tank.

Here's my reef tank, I just took down this tank a couple years ago because I had to move. It was about 8 years old.

I'll be starting a new reef tank once I buy a house I can't wait.

Pretty badass Vinnie. I'm about to start building a reef tank with my organic chem professor for research at school and I'm pretty damn excited!

What's the toughest thing about maintaining a reef for you?

Not great shots but these are almost a year old and everything here is still alive a growing. :)

FFFFUUUUUU must resist urge to set up a reef tank!

I've got a little 10 gallon that I'm about to switch over to a shrimp tank. Nothing too crazy.

Toughest part is getting everything started and cycled well. Once the tank is properly cycles (read: nitrogen cycle) and assuming you have no inherent problems with your stocking and setup then there shouldn't be a problem. Do your research, there is so much to cover, and you will never stop learning.

Keeping a reef tank with corals requires much more stringent water parameters than a fish-only tank. But to me that's where the hobby really gets good. There's so much to it that it would be pointless to even try to explain it in a few sentences.

Avoid canister filters or any sort of mechanical filtration, they will simply accumulate waste and will make your tank worse off if not taken apart and cleaned very often.
Use a protein skimmer; they actually remove waste from the water.

Regular maintenance isn't much. Feed everything one or twice a day. Periodically clean the glass and do water changes. Break out your test kits if something looks like it's not doing well. None of these things are work to me, I enjoy it just like people enjoy working on their cars.

It's like your own little part of the ocean that you're the "god" of. It's so addicting.

OK so I have a tank and a setup for freshwater but I would love to do saltwater instead. What kind of costs would you think I'm looking at to get started? Also, do you have some sites to point me towards for newbies? That tank looks awesome, saltwater fish always look so much more vibrant than freshwater.

It's way too much to cover here. If your not really into it and not genuinely interested in learning about saltwater aquariums then I wouldn't recommend it. The #1 most important thing is research. The people that fail are the people that don't really care for learning about it and just want to have something nice to look at in their house.

It's really amazing how fast it has evolved in just the past decade. For example, LED lighting has gone from being relatively unheard of, not cost effective, and not suitable to keep corals alive to being the best choice for a reef tank in almost every way, in just the past few years. Same with protein skimmer technology, test kits, controllers, etc. A decade ago breeding saltwater fish was very uncommon, now it's done by many and there are now even "designer" clownfish through selective breeding. Same with corals, it's now just as common for them to come from another hobbyist or farm than from the ocean.

Everyone says it's an expensive hobby and that's true, but compared to having an e30 it's pretty cheap.
