    Very strange computer issue

    Dell inspiron 6000 laptop computer
windows vista 32bit (i know, it was all i had around when i brought this comp back to life)

this computer has worked very well for me over the last year+ hardly ever a hiccup. last week it developed an issue that is pretty much baffling me; the computer will run fine booted normally and surviving off of its battery. When i plug it in, the computer may stay alive for a second or two but then seems to short out and the fan goes a little haywire and then the computer just stops and shuts off. This has nothing to do with a particular startup process or application as deduced by a simplified/streamlined startup, it seems to be purely electrical. I can start the computer (while plugged in) and it will get all the way to the user login screen before shorting and dying. On a couple of tries i even managed to log in and open up chrome before it went kaput. When plugged in, the computer takes anywhere between 2 and 30 seconds before schizing out.

If you even read that whole blob of words, you're probably thinking "well, no shit, the charger is fucked and shorting out the motherboard" but I just bought a new charger off of amazon and the same thing happens with both chargers...here's where it really gets strange for me:

Right now, i am coming to you from said laptop in safe mode w/ networking and the charger is plugged in. The computer can run forever like this. Repeat: NONE of these issues arise in safe mode plugged in.

I've taken the comp apart a couple of times to thoroughly clean it and closely inspect it but i can't seem to see anything burnt, broken, desoldered, nada. Also, I can't really start the computer with the case fully open...can't directly observe the issue in action.

I come to you, R3V, for a little help. Internet searches have proven quite fruitless and it's really starting to annoy me. If I can't fix this shit soon, I'm gonna have to go grab a cheapy little netbook to satisfy my mobile computing needs.

Since you can run fine in safe mode it must be some sort of a software issue. I would start by reinstalling windows.

yeah i'd just torrent and burn a copy of win7 (or wait for win8) on a dvd disc and just start fresh.

Yeah I would grab the files you wanna save, reformat and see if it still has the issue.

Symptomatic of a bad driver. Which a re installation of a fresh copy of windows will more than likely fix.

The charging of the laptop isn't really driver related, at all. But the little icon in the bottom corner of the screen is, and if that file got corrupted it could basically just be filling up the RAM with nonsense data, running it full very quickly, windows locking up, and BAM.

          Freaking the fuck out.

It's a quick and easy start. You don't need to have a key to install 7. It gives you a month to try it out before entering one.

this makes total sense...no battery/charge icon in safe mode...

I wonder if I could just disable that icon somehow as I don't have a physical copy of windows at the moment

I may still grab a netbook of some sort when I get a chance, 2-4hrs of battery time could really help me tune my car better vs 15-20minutes currently

Meh, I have a desktop I'm just reluctant to dig it out and set it up
