If you want to start to learn electronics, the kits are the way to go - even if you think it's beneath you, and you know to "solder" - grab your nephew and have some fun. Explain to them how the atmel attiny chip has codes stored in it for all - and how to solder right - it's should be fun.

What are the caps for? What are the transistors for? Why can't you see the LED blink? Can you see them on a video camera?

I picked up an uno starter pack a few weeks ago and have been playing around with it. I want to get some different shields and sensors to really get into it. Right now I'm waiting on about a dozen AT Tiny85s that I ordered so I can try using the uno as a programmer and shrink some projects down.
