You guys shot down my idea to be an auto tech in another thread I made. I'm really up in the air about what I want to do and I was hoping for suggestions. I'm a 26 year old with an undergrad psych degree and a 2.8-ish GPA. My only experience is in food service as a delivery driver and whatnot.

Wtf should I do.

What do you enjoy, Mike? What sparks your interest? I did not know what I wanted to do for the longest time. I eventually volunteered in a hospital and decided to get a BSN so I could become an RN. When I enjoyed the volunteer work, it was clear that I should get trained so I could get paid to work as an RN. I like the idea of a job that can't be sent to foreign lands.

Shit man I don't know. I like to work on cars sometimes, love driving them. I like music, I'm pretty sick at guitar but I dropped out of music school to go to psych. I got burned out on it. I'm worried about getting burned out on whatever I get into.

If you enjoy working on cars, then do it man. Don't let what other people said about the profession take away from what you want to do, and enjoy doing. There are people that hate their job in EVERY SINGLE profession. These people will go "oh, why would you choose to do that?!" everyone from Lawyers, and Doctors, to Mechanics and Musicians. But in every career you will also find people that absolutely LOVE going to work in the morning. These people chose their career based on what they're passionate about, and what they wanted to do regardless of what some other people thought.

Do what makes YOU happy. Do what is going to make YOU achieve your long term goals.

I think this is pretty sound advice, but do I really want to turn a wrench? I feel like I should maybe aim higher and be an engineer or a lawyer or something.

Well I am 26 years old and I think I should have got involved in stock market trading or computer programing the money to be made is crazy then you can spend it on the cars you want.

My brother inlaw and sister just moved into a house for rent at $1000 a week he is a stock market analyzer don't know how much he makes but it is a shit load.

I said this in another thread (don't know if it was yours), but pick up the book Strengths Finder 2.0 and take the assessment. It's scary how well it can pick out your aptitudes and point you in a direction. It won't tell you what job you should be doing, but it will give you some ideas of what sorts of things fit your natural abilities and how to develop them.

Another idea is to not take on debt because once you do you can get locked into a job you discover you don't like but are stuck doing because you have to pay the loan. Having low overhead gives you freedom to experiment with various types of jobs or volunteer activities. Try a bunch of things and analyze what you like, what you don't, and why. I also believe its a good idea to study trends and demographics so you have a better idea what will be in demand down the road.

Certain careers will continue to be in demand no matter what the economy is doing and can't be offshored easily.

You are doing the right thing by asking lots of questions.

Keep trying and you will find something decent, but I repeat: avoid locking yourself into a job or career due to borrowing money.

Let me start by telling you that working on cars isn't turning wrenches anymore. I do more work on electronics than I do with cars. I started out just turning wrenches but then I got a little burned out on it. I will tell you this, I am 23, I have been doing this since I started changing oil at my brothers shop when I was 14. I have a book of certifications, and I love my job. I get paid very well to do my job, but I do it because that's what I like to do. I graduated high school with a 4.0GPA and graduated business management school with a 3.5GPA. I could have done anything. I decided that this is what I like to do, and when I wanted to try something a little different, I took a promotion and at 23, I am the youngest service manager on our shop network.

Why did you get a psych degree if you didn't want to work in the psychology field.? Considering you only got a 2.8 GPA sounds like you wasted a bunch of money. If you have no attachments move to Hawaii and become a surfer or Vail and become a snowboarder or just travel for a living. It's easier than you think and that's what folks with real jobs daydream about anyway.

Best advice I can give you. Don't take advice from people on a car forum. Do what you want to do.
