moving...cheapest to sell everything or rent moving truck?

been thinking about this lately. I hate, and was wondering if it'll be cheaper to sell all my furnishing and re-buy or stuff it all in a truck and move it with me?

i USEd to sella ll of my shit then rebuy it.. then when i factored in the hassle of rebuying new stuff (if you're looking on craigslist)

driving out and dealing with yahoos, and all that it entails... its better just to rent a truck anda few movers and keep your shit

unless you're balling out of control and are buying all new stuff and feel like spending 10-15k
I can run Auto Checks on VINs for tips/donations:
PM me VIN(s) and I'll get you ALL the public recorded info that I have available.

^ really depends on the distance, amount of stuff you have and its value.

I know for me when I moved out at 18 I was blown away by how much all the little things you need in life cost when you buy things in one big wave. Not everyone is going to want your night stand, garbage can for the bathroom and laundry basket. It's those random little things that will add up fast if you need to buy them all over again, and you're definitely not selling them for a premium. All those $5-20 items are never going to sell for even 1/4 what you paid for them so you're essentially going to fork out nearly the entire cost of buying new ones at the new place....that's a lot to spend.

A simple Uhaul search tells me it's $1400 to rent a 17' Uhaul van to travel 2300km. Bring that up to maybe $2k when you factor in fuel, a new mattress set and bed will cost you nearly that much alone because you're NOT going to get much for a used mattress.

WTF kind of question is this? You could be moving across town or across the Country how is anyone supposed to know the answer?

Do do some math and figure it out for yourself instead of asking R3V. U-haul can give you quotes you know.

I don't know how it is in the states but in Canada you can write off moving expenses on your taxes too.

If your house is furnished with chipboard furniture from walmart and cinderblock and board bookshelves then, no its not worth paying anything to move them. (or hassling with selling them so they be in the goodwill pile or the dumpster) Anything nicer and the value is worth moving, the more valuable (sentimental or monetary) the further I'd be willing to move it.

Rugs are worth paying more to move if they really tie the room together. ;)

I just recently moved from the east coast to the west coast. 2400 miles. I sold most of my big stuff, bought a 6x12 trailer and pulled it across the country with my grand cherokee. It was a lot cheaper to do that than to rent a box truck and a trailer to put the GC on.

I'm moving from Nebraska to Washington in June. Sold a lot of shit that I haven't used it awhile and got rid of stuff that was old and needed to be replaced anyway. The total distance of the move will determine if it's worth it to haul your shit to your new place. I found it pretty satisfying to sell a bunch of stuff though.

All your shit is from Ikea and Wal-mart patio section anyway so the answer is easy.
Karate chop that cheap assed Ikea shit and start a fire with it then toss in your plastic dining set.
                  Done.

Unless everything you own is complete garbage, its going to be cheaper to rent a truck and move that shit. If you want to save more, pack everything yourself and give some buddies some beer to move the big stuff, that way you don't need any moving company help, just a truck. We just moved from our 1 bedroom apartment into a 4 bedroom town house and after looking at furniture prices its opened my eyes to how expensive trying to buy a lot of furniture at once is.
