Seriously herbie. Your going to encourage someone to venture into bear country and deep into the back country with out bear spray???????? Really are you fucking serious????? I don't go into the front country trails and board walks with out bear spray. There were 512 incidents with bears in yosemite for 2011 ( data from the parks service )

You it will never happen to me hippie urban city slickers that hike into the back country 3 days a yaer are always the ones that bitch the loudest when something bad happens. Yet your kind dispence advice like not needing bear spray in bear country...............................

I've hiked in Denali for 5 days, encountered a bear and did all the correct stuff you're supposed to do (according to the 30 minute video they require you to watch before going backpacking in Denali) and guess what, the bear went away. If you do all the stuff you're supposed to do, the risk of a bear attack drops dramatically. I'm a little wary that bear spray may not stop a 1 ton 35mph mammal charging at you, or that you would be able to pull off using it correctly in a moment of panic. This view point was shared by some of the park rangers I talked with in Denali (who live in bear country).

I also encountered a moose and those fuckers are scary because they will chase you down. I would be more concerned about moose. Bring moose spray.

Herbie I live in bear country as well. I am fully aware of all the "right" things too do when you encounter a bear as well. I know people that have lived here all their lives and don't use any bear sprayand others that don't walk to their car cfrom their house with out it. Fucks sake jack hannah was filming and ad for something glacier last year I think and they had to fend of a grizz with spray. Its like carrying a gun. Its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I have been with in 30 yards of bears its an unnerving situation to say the least

As to use, you practice with it before you go, they are like 40 bucks buy 2 and practice takcing off the latxh and squirting with one so you get the hang of it and are not fumbling if you need it for real. The guys in ak say the spray is much more effective that bullets, but that dose not stop me from carrying a 454 casull in my pack. (Nat parks) in a easy to get to spot, or on my hip every where eles.

As too moose. Ahhh yeah those fuckers will kill ya, if you have a dog with and you encounter one turn the dog lose and get away from the dog. That moose sees the dog as a wolf, and since you are with it you are a threat too, whrer there is 1 wolf there is more kinda thing.......a moose will go way out of its way to stomp the fuck out a wolf and you in this case.

Nbio: pm me when you plan on being around, where you guys planning on staying ect....(east or west side). If I am home I can help getting you to some of the places 99.9% of visitors never go. When are you planning on going. The sun road is projected for a early open in mid june. Best time is the week 2ed week after labor day. Crowds are much smaller and things are still open (this is when most of the locals go), should check the sun road construction time table though fro when they are going to shut one side down. The thing about that late in the season is weather can get kinda fickle at times not to mention early snows at higher elevations, or just shitty weather all togeather, but hell I have sceen in snow in late june in the valleys around here

Too lazy to read, but just in case it wasn't mentioned you have to have permits for half dome and they are damn near impossible to get...you have to call in at 6am 3 months ahead or something ridiculous and pray some goddamn scalper doesn't beat you to them.

Plenty of other great hikes to do there though.

Did a seven day hike there. Beautiful. Make sure to hit the water slides on the way to Hetchy Ketchy Reservoir, then hike down into the Valley at Yosemite Falls. Stay away from any Mother Bear with cubs and you will be fine. Put all foodstuffs high in a tree. Purify water (halogen tablets).
Most important thing. Take care of your feet. Broken in boots and two pair of socks. Cotton underneath, wool outside. First aid in case of blisters.
I always hike in shorts. I always pack extra socks. If you tend to chafe, bring powder. Insulite pad for sleeping.
Make sure your pack fits you (most are adjustable) and all the weight is carried by the belt on your hips.
I sleep in the open and carry a very lite tube tent for rain.
Don't worry so much about bears. No Grizz in California. I've never had a problem. Do not sleep with food.

Just got back from Yosemite the other day. Was f'n awesome! I didn't do to many back woods hikes but the mist trail to the top of Vernal falls and Nevada falls was sweet! There was some great places to go exploring. It's beautiful out there. Unfortunately they didn't have the steel cables up yet to do halfdome until the end of May. The hike from the valley floor to the top of Yosemite falls was killer. But im not in the best of shape. haha
