    Anyone daily w114?

I was looking at the local classifieds and found that w114s are pretty cheap..

I searched MB forums if it's good to daily w114, and lots of people mentioned that they had no problem driving those everyday..

I daily my e30 everyday throughout the year..and gave me almost no problem at all. The question is, can I do the same with w114?

yes, that era is very reliable. w126's were the absolute tank of the mercedes lineup before the cost-cutting of the 90's, and w108's and 109's were a little primitive, but the w114's and diesel w115's slot nicely between those two and are absolutely capable vehicles for very low prices, and (if you can wrench and are resourceful) fairly cheap to own too.

the catch is the inline 6's in the 250's and 280's are absolute gas pigs and the 5 cylinder 240 and 300 diesels are slow as balls (the latter only coming with automatic).

but they are beautiful, robust cars!

My mind reels at the thought of the awesome indie babes you could pull in that thing.

I'll second evan, it'll be mega slow, but oh dude, classy.

How about transmissions? are automatics smooth and reliable? And, if they are, are they worth choosing over manual trans? Does that thing have a syncro by the way?

I'm seriously thinking of selling my e30 if my financial situation gets better. I mean, BMWs in same era seems more expensive and I can't find any in good condition.

I had an auto tranny that didn't quit, before I sold it it hit about 300k with original auto tranny, shifted a little rough from first to second if I was in a hurry but it never failed. I would opt for a manual but the autos work pretty good.

I don't know from experience, but I've heard the mercedes manuals arent as hood as their automatics. The automatics are supposed to be very reliable.

I'd love to daily an old merc, but haven't had the opportunity to pick one up.

MB had the same supplier for their autos as Volvo had for their autos (Aisin), at least back in the 70's and 80's. Not sure about when they switched to the FWD cars.

They are still in business and some of their work can be found in the early generation Fusion, another tranny that has been very reliable. The later models, not so much but that was a joint venture b.t GM and Ford.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

My friend DDs a W123 300d non turbo Automatic.

Its been VERY RELIABLE. When he got it he probably put 1k into it, on top of the 2k he paid. But its never left him stranded.

he does love to sink money into it, as any old car you will have too. he spent 1k (Kinda got raped) on getting every part of the vacuum system working again...and it still doesn't work right. Everything in that car is controlled by Vacuum, The auto trannys shift regulator, the vents , the locks ETC. if theres a leak it really screws everything up.

But if your just gonna beat on it, it will NEVER die.

The market for them is increasing just like E30s

That car looks AWESOME! Only problem is I would feel like a dick driving it in the winter. I only have 2 parking spots. One for my company van and one for my personal car. So I couldnt have a winter car and a summer car. I wish I could though.

Again, that is just awesome. I would love to roll up in a car like that and Im 21.

I mean it's not that expensive and valuable to be garaged for winter..and winter in Toronto isn't that bad.. I only drove my e30 twice on the snow. At worst I can just take the subway.

For me it has nothing to do with value. Its that its a classic car. I just couldnt winter drive a 40 year old car. Now my ix on the other hand. Vroom vroom.

Actually there is a big difference in the W114/5 autos. They are crap.

Not only that, there rare/expensive crap, and to top it all off they make an already slow car even slower.

I got rid of my '72 220d because the POS "four bolt" auto. Shame too, was a good looking, great running car with clean interior (and worlds most confusing climate control system)

Guy I sold it to let it sit a couple months and then junked it. Shame.
