I just bought a 90 325i coupe 5 speed for 380.00. Yes it needed a fender, hood, valance and bumper. All local junk yard pick ups. Drove it home and now its my track bitch.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

I only know about 3 other 'car people' around here. I end up helping friends with stuff all the time.... what really amazes me is how little shops know.
Had a friend with a 71 flat black ford maverick that was running like shit. He managed to get the thing resurrected back from whatever hell it was living in enough to move around but wanted a shop to help him set the timing. He went to 3 shops and none of them knew how to unbolt and turn a distributor, let alone put a timing light on the thing.
Helped a friend buy a sweet 74 J10 pickup 2 weeks ago. Needs a little love but the axles alone were worth what we paid for it. Same issue as above~ running like shit... turn the distro a quarter turn and runs like a gas guzzling dream.

I have yet to pay more than $1500 for a vehicle lol
The big issue is that most of the people I know, the young post-college still-cant-find-a-decent-job types, are the ones that really could benefit from knowing how to work on their own cars. But daddy bought them a 5k decent car when they were in highschool and now 8 years later it is falling apart, they dont have the coin to buy a new car, and dont have the cash to keep paying a shop to maintain the pos for them. The credit card makes them lazy and is what is making america go under these days.
Thanks dad for the broke ass $1200 318 that I had to stop with the e-brake until I learned what a proportioning valve was. Now I am doomed to help all my friends fix their horrible decisions of vehicles.

Since everyone is sharing stories of friends doing stupid things after asking for help, I'll add mine in the mix.
Friend was looking for his first car. No idea what he wanted except for an autotragic.
Found him a beat, but decent 96 Jetta. It ran rough and looked old, but had recently had tons of cash dumped into it because the owner paid an incompetent or crooked mechanic to fix it. Owner was asking 1200 for it. I got him down to 300. Towed it 2 miles home and fixed the issue - plug wires and timing were wrong. 30 minutes worth of work.
That car lasted him 2 years with only minor work needed, even when he rear ended a Toyota SUV. The auto transmission failed at just over 200k so he begged and borrowed money from grandma to replace the vehicle.
With his total of 2000 to find a replacement and cover any repairs needed we began looking. Keeping in mind his very low budget for fuel and repairs in the future his options were slim.
Despite the lack of an auto tranny he was interested in old bugs, as well as other vw's and older BMW's because of ease of maintenance and relative cheap costs of parts.
He talked to his lazy stay at home gf and she TOLD him he was not getting a bug because she didn't like how they looked.
Long story short, I drove him around without so much as a thanks using my time and gas. I provided him with a list of cars that met all requirements and passed mechanical inspections.
He turned them down because they "weren't the body style (he) likes", "paint wasn't perfect", and various other crappy reasons for turning down good vehicles when you are desperate for transportation. I told him I was done wasting my time and money searching for HIS car without any gratitude for my time and efforts.
He was convinced to fix his gf's beat old Oldsmobile that was on its last leg and had had many presidential solutions performed on the wiring by her and her dad.
Grandma found out and took the money back. GF left him immediately after he fixed her car and he was back to square 1.Comment
