Also, a quick search reveals that RIT has a Mechanical engineering program with an automotive option, something to consider if you plan to stay around here for college.

I would have to agree with this Matt. I grew up in Orchard Park and the South towns area and I can tell you first hand that there is really nothing pertaining to what you want to do for a living in WNY. I left Buffalo to go to school for Collision Repair and fabrication at NADC (Nashville Auto Diesel College) in 2004. Even though Its not a school that I would recommend, being in the south there are MANY connections to racing. Granted, 9/10 are for NASCAR, its a start. Not to mention, there is A LOT more work outside of Buffalo. Your best option is to leave Buffalo, look at schools like UTI or wyo-tech and move somewhere where the Automotive performance industry is prevalent and just get your foot in the door and work your way up...

As everyone else is saying, at your age it's best to get into the business part of automotive sports. Spot a young driver on the come up and try to learn and peer with him. Then represent and build a team off that.

I was once 17 with the same exact aspirations. I let them go too easily chasing puss and money. Thinking I had to go to school and I just had to have a good job at such a young age but I was totally wrong. If I could go back, I would spend my life in the garage building something and going out and networking.

Mechanical and electrical engineering are your best bets if you'd like to get into auto but at the same time, if you get burnt out of it.. You still have a profession background and a degree that can take you anywhere.

DOn't be afraid to leave friends and family either. That's another fuck up of mine.

I'm not knocking your post or anything, but please don't spread that uti/wyotech stuff around.

That's probably the worst thing that's ever happened to this age of mechanics.

That and you come home with a fuggin huge bill that takes you years upon years (while slapping you on the ass with interest) to pay back. Especially with the money you'll be making upon "graduation".

Believe me I know, I'm looking at 30,000 in loans right now. But unfortunitly, thats what the majority of the industry has gone too. It's almost impossible to get a job in the automotive industry just by starting from the bottom and working your tail to the bone unless you know somebody.

I've been ICAR and ASE certified since 2004 and be the first person to tell you that "schools" like that are a joke but places won't look at you unless you have some sort of industry education under your belt
