    E39 M5 Vs ZR1 at Thunderhill

Had an amazing day doing Hooked on Driving at Thunderhill Raceway. First time out on the track with the beast and boy was it a blast. Unfortunately my tires were very low on tread, so grip wasn't optimal, but hey some Michelin Super Sports and MAYBE a StopTech BBK are on the way.

Anyways, I had a chance to ride in a ZR1 with a professional driver. I filmed both his run, and mine, and set them side by side. He runs about 8 seconds faster than me, but hey I was only 0.5 seconds slower than an F355 with a pro driver. By NO means do I consider myself above average as a driver, so if you want to roast my poor lines on the track, feel free . I was utterly impressed with the car.

    Here is the video:

    Enjoy!

I miss that track! What was your best lap time in your car? And ZR1?

Driver instructors will never drive at the limit and risk an off or worst when they have a paying student in their car. Their goal is to go fast/slow enough for the student to learn where the lines are, track layout, brake markers, etc etc. Don't base your racecraft off of what you just experienced.

The fast lines are not always the race line.

Also remember that high horse power mask driver's true ability. A mistake in corner entry or exit will result in a little bit more throttle out of the corner whereas cars with little horse power you need to learn how to drive at the limits. Example, brake later, carry more speed, and gas sooner. E30s are in inertia cars. If you lose inertia in the corners you aint going anywhere.

Lets take Thunderhill for an example in an e30. Starting from turn 6 up to 9. You should be full throttle through all of those turns and do no lift. Everyone's first thought is to brake or lift at turn 8 and then full throttle uphill to turn 9. You should be full throttle, pinch the inside of 8 and then the car should be starting to drift/slide wide and you power out of it. It'll be many many trackdays till you get the courage & skill to do that.

For right now invest in brake pads, tires and seat time. 90% of all driving instructors started out driving e30s or miatas for a reason.
