    ^Kia actually has a European designer. (ex-Audi)

Personally, I think they're outdoing their Japanese neighbors.

Agreed. Some of these kids should remember that Honda/Datsun/Toyota were all piles of shit in the 70's. Yes they were cool but still piles.

I drive a 03 civic now and its fun, engine is amazing. I have nothing against honda its great.

but check out 2012s hondas and 2012s hyundais and ( some) kias.

Other than the fact that honda uses some nice leather if you pay 1000s for it.... its inferior in every way.

Hondas just hit the crapper this year its cutting edge news. They just couldnt compete.

Its not a time of brand loyalty, and associating certain brands with quality you think of from the 90s. Its another time where the brands are changing order.

If youre in the market for a new car, or someday youre in the market for a used car from this year, a honda is just slow and ugly, and fat and burns gas.
consumer reports shows falling quality for most of their models in reliability, but watch out for when 2012 models get more data they are going to be crappy.

like anything with cars its not going to be brand specific like all hyundais rule all hondas suck. But the big sellers the optima vs the accord definitely

So I made a thread a few months back relaying my Hyundai horror story, but here is the basic idea. My wife and I bought a brand new 2012 Hyundai Tucson, on the drive home the check engine light came on. After repeated trips to the dealer in the following few days and constant assurance that everything was ok, they told us the car needed a new transmission. It had like 200 miles on it and all of the miles were from the 25-30 mile drive to and from the dealer. Long story short I was pissed and wanted a replacement new car not a fixed one and a potentially problematic one. Hours of time was devoted to phone conversations with many people from Hyundai corporate and in the end they offered us 2 covered payments and an extension of the bumper to bumper warranty to 10 years 100k. (The typical 10 year is only for the power train) I emailed the CEO and told him about rude and unhelpful employees and wanted to let him know after the experience we would probably never buy another Hyundai. A few months later I got a call and they said they would replace the car but we could not keep the warranty extension and we had to return the refund for the first two payments. We kept the original car to save further paperwork and phone headaches and its been fine every since. Has maybe 10-15k miles on it now and we have not had one issue since, but the warranty helps my piece of mind. I still will probably never buy another. In the end they agreed to resolve the issue, but the whole ordeal just left a poor taste in my mouth for the brand. Since our issue I have heard several other similar stories from people I have met.

Look into the new Jetta, I drove two for a decent amount of time, a Base model Jetta S with an Automatic and a 2.5SE with a 5 speed. They aren't bad at all, and price is very good. The TDI is most definitely out of your price range but the S and SE are very good contenders that deliver good MPG's and have decent looks.

We have the AWD version and never use the little "eco mode", we can get almost 28mpg on the highway, but usually around town its like 22-24ish. This is obviously keeping your foot out of the mostly gutless motor, I will however use the little electronic shift function when merging onto highways and such to rev out the rpms a bit to get up to speed.

But yeah the biggest issue I had was that their corporate people were assholes to me on the phone.
