^ lol o-k if that's how it went down in your mind

Agreeing with people who know what they are talking about may make you right, but it doesn't mean you can gloat about it. Not like you did/said anything relevant.

Nothing that anyone else said influenced what I said. I just mentioned that they had also said that, but I looked at the pic and was gonna say that it didn't look savable anyway.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Y'ever drive one of these french buckets with a V8 in it? Imagine having that incredible suspension (trust me, the design is WAY better than our stupid E30s), the total sleeper look, and 300ft.lbs of torque?

I drove one that had been done back in the late 70's on an earlier Peugeot...the thing was so goddamn ugly it was hard to believe...but damn that car worked well! Quick, smooth and damn near invisible.

Anyway, GL on the obsession. Get that parts car and dive in.

haha no way! That sounds crazy. Must have been a 504, I think I've actually heard of a few in the states that had that done ... but mostly the swaps happen over in Australia with the big Holden V8. But yes, so far the search for a nice parts car is going great, I've lined up a 4 or 5 different visits when I get back to the Bay Area, week of the 18th..

Sweet. I think it would be terrific if you got that ugly damn thing back on the road all proper. Nothing like a car owned by someone who has entirely stupid reasons for owning it, and knows it, and still does it anyway.

Carry on, my man. Best of luck in the search!

replacing the quarter will create a more rigid body than if it were to be repaired. with a impact, metal is weakend, when attempted to repair it gets what is called "work hardened" witch makes the part more brittle and will fail in the future
While I completely agree with you that the entire rear quarter should be replaced, your premise is flawed. You are correct in that the tensile strength is compromised because it's past yield strength. But the steel on that car isn't some exotic alloy... there would be a little bit of work hardening, but the carbon content in the steel isn't nearly high enough for work hardening to get it hard enough to become brittle.

I've heat treated, carburized, work hardened a bunch of metals in varying alloys, so I've got some first hand experience with changing properties of steel.

OP: You've made the right decision to have the rear quarter replaced. And that thing must have some serious sentimental value for you to be saving it. It is an ugly car. But I think it's pretty cool to have something that is important enough to you that you'll spend the time and money to fix it when every other person would just write the thing off as a total loss.
