    Try to do some reading on Tom's Hardware, you may be able to find people with similar needs as yours.

      One thing to keep in mind: For an undergrad degree, you likely won't even skim the surface of what programs like inventor, solideorks, creo, etc are capable of and thus probably won't require nearly as much heavy lifting from your computer as you might suspect.

      To give you an idea, I can run creo for most modeling and assemblies under 25 parts on my 3 year old low end laptop without much trouble. I haven't tried, but would be comfortable running simple mechanica analysis as well on it.

      I started a thread a couple days ago looking for the same thing you are, but my budget is half yours...
