I repair, build and service computers. So I know about hardware and software. I would like to learn about programming and hacking. I wouldn't hack a server because I think it would be funny or anything. I just want to understand how people do it. Also I'm going back to school for programming and I don't want to walk in with absolutely no knowledge on it.

here's some reading to get you started on C++. I've been meaning to study this myself, I just keep getting distracted by the rest of the internet.

It's much easier to understand "hacking" if you know how to program. Because hacking is essentially finding code that was poorly written that allows you to take advantage of some exploit, like if the programmer doesn't implement error checking of the user's input that may be taken advantage of.
Once you start your intro programming classes try get ahead of the class and read more about every subject they go into.
What are you taking? computer science?Zinno '89 <24v swap in progress>

Try out code academy to get a head start on coding. Nothing is going to replace schooling but I have a friend who has been using it has been showing good progress.

Oh man, a language war on r3v! My $0.02 is to learn at least enough C to have a firm grasp on pointers. After that focus on whatever language appeals to you the most and work on some projects that also allow you to learn SQL. My personal preference is PostgreSQL.
If you are looking for some insight into how hacks are accomplished I would read up on some of the post mortems from high profile attacks and familiarize yourself with any concepts that you don't understand. The recent HB Gary breech is as good a place to start as any:
And remember, don't hack a bank across state lines from your house, that's how you get busted by the FBI.Comment

"I want to learn to hack"....is cringe worthy to say the least.
Sounds like you'll be really far behind. Most people going to school for CS has at least dabbled in basic, c, or a sql for fun.
If you haven't messed around with programming in your free time, just for kicks, you're most likely not the kind of guy that will really enjoy it doing it in school full time.
Not to discourage you....but just a heads up. Your fellow students will most like be able to already write basic programs and understand things like sub-routines, arrays, recursion, ect..Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment
