To change the oil in my truck my self, the Oil alone is just shy of 40 bucks a gallon. 10qt is 100, good filter 22.

I would say 115 to have someone change it is not that bad. All though I would not have gone to jiffy lube

Just because you got some oil on sale at some Wally World shack didn't mean that's what the retail customer pays. My shop charges 10.50/qrt for synthetic oil. Labor on oil changes is $20.
Its called "value added". You are paying for the service, on top of parts and labor. Shops, even lowly Jiffy Lube, have a lot of overhead and expenses that you don't see.
And then, they must make a profit. It is a business after all. Its not there to help DIY people, rather its for "regular' people who are happy to pay $80-140 for and oil change.

Well then, I just did a pretty good job at exposing what kind of savings could be had DIYing then didn't I?

Regardless; I'm not being condescending on the OP. Compared to what he could have saved, I think he got shafted and I feel bad for the guy. However, when you do break it down like that, I do admit that it really brings to light how much the shop actually takes away at the bottom line.

            I'm just a DIY-biased old fart wannabe; don't mind me :-P

Honestly I don't change the oil in my wife's car, i hate working on it and consider all the maintenance as an expense. I get the same oil change at the local quick lube for $60 which is $10-20 more than what I can buy the stuff to do it for. I am glad to pay it if that thing will go another 100k.

Did Jiffy Lube do any thing wrong? No. Did they rip off my wife because she didn't already have that giant stack of coupons they handed her with the receipt? Yes.

$120 is quite reasonable for a synthetic oil change on a Passat.

You guys don't realize what it's like to have labor rates varying from $80/hr for the sketchiest backyard one-man shops to $130/hr at the independents, all the way up to $165/hr at the dealers. A lot of people I talk to are miffed that BMW wanted $500 for their latest oil change when it used to only cost $350.

Where are you guys getting these labor rates? It's not like a certified VW mechanic changed the oil, some dropout making maybe $12 bucks an hour did it.

                      1) who the fuck cares where you buy your oil from? backwoods wally world? LOL sure, I'd rather drive to walmart and spend 1/4 the price on my oil. Less than $30 for 5qt of mobil1 full synth 24/7, regular price. enjoy your prestigious Autozone mobil1 synthetic that costs twice as much even on sale, I will continue to use my white trash walmart mobil1 synthetic.

                      2) you can buy amsoil, royal purple or redline at my local auto parts store for less than $12 a quart RETAIL. paying that much for generic synth and an oil filter is ridiculous.

                      3) I don't care if your shop charges that much for oil, it doesn't make it right. "its european" is a joke, oil is oil, filters are filter, if you get gouged because of the make of your car they don't deserve your business.

                      4) Hell, jiffy lube probably gets my $15 oil filter at a discount too.

I just picked up 5 quarts of synth blend for $2.49 a quart, I don't really care that its no-name, I've gotta change it out anyway. If its THAT BIG OF A DEAL to get your oil changed rather than running it an extra 500-1000 miles (it probably isn't, unless its already 2000+ miles overdue)... oh well, I guess you don't mind paying for it anyway.

tl;dr they're making an easy 100% profit on that, including paid wages and overhead. enjoy your robbery.

$114 is outrageous, 'euro car' or not.

Takes me around 80-90 bucks just to buy the oil and filter for my 01 330xi

using castrol edge syntec stuff @ around 8.99 a quart here in wisco at
8-10 quarts + filter comes in around 90 bucks. :(

Not everyone wants to deal with the old oil after too. They probably charged her to take care of her old oil like they do for your old tires after you get new ones.

Like previously stated its a convenience so its "chargeable" if that makes sense
