I know Subaru bolted bench seats in the bed to get around paying import tariffs when they were new....and I have only seen two running examples in my lifetime.
I think they're pretty cool. Would be a fairly unique base for a WRX engine. I'd definitely be removing the seats from the truck bed if I got a pre 1985 though. Over here they're called a Brumby and didn't get the rear seats though. Subaru only put them in for the USDM market to avoid the 25% tariff for light trucks.
There's been an '84 on Los Angeles CL I've had my eye on...doesn't seem to be getting snatched up. Low miles, repainted Outback spruce pearl green, 5 sp transmission installed. Interior looks shabby, jumper seats seem to be gone.
But I've always wanted one of these. Might be a fun beach beater/Marshall half stack hauler/camper.

N/A EJ22 are a relatively easy swap and you can even get adapter plates so you can bolt one to the original transmission.
I think this would be in order. I've owned subarus before and the EJ22 seems to be as bulletproof as the m20 (notwithstanding head gasket issues on the 2.5)
