Maybe some of you guys don't know how to read.
A contract/lease/agreemen in writing is a legal binding document, weather you think the landlords are assholes, unfair or whatever, they have the right.

Vedubin made a good point; while it might not be your fault that your employment ceased, it's certainly not your landlords fault.

You can try to be cooperative with him in working out an agreement, but I can't see why you'd expect him to take a hit for a situation he's not involved in.

Be cool with him, ask him how he came to that $1700 figure and if it's reasonable unfortunately you're SOL. He may be cool though and be willing to take a months rent instead if you suggest it, not everyone's looking to fuck someone else over for gain.

Rental Laws vary from state to state. In Virginia we have the Legal Aid Society. They give out the beans on what landlords can and cant do in VA.

I know nothing about NY laws, but it landlord can't just pick random ass numbers out of the air. My ex went through this exact situation with a condo. Biatch Landlady tried to keep her whole deposit, even when her roommate was assuming all of the rent and NOT moving. So she threatened to counter sue and she gave back all but $400 which she attibuted to carpet damage. In VA all deductions must be itemized at their real cost. Their no "time" fee for landlords, maintaining their property is their responsibility in any situation.

Your LL is putting you over a barrel. They expect you to cough it up and walk away, dont. Find out what the options are in your state, R3v isnt a bunch of lawyers
