Contemplating ROTC

For my last few years of college I am contemplating doing ROTC. I am currently going for a degree in City Planning, which is a branch off of architecture. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here went ROTC during college or OCS after college and what branch would you recommended if I decided to go that route.

Enlisted--->Officer too many young kids come in with no knowledge(at least in my branch Navy) of how system works and trying to tell me(20+ years) how things should run instead of shutting the F**K up and listening.

Never did ROTC though, so just my opinion.

Joined the wrong clan then Court. I can't stand the FNG's either but have to say Yes Sir and bite my tongue.

Did a PA Tour the other day for a few Generals, needless to say I was allowed to speak my mind.

Do ROTC if you have the opportunity. But If you don't plan on joining the service don't waste the slot.

I think this argument has been beaten to death in many a forum of debate, but I can see both sides. More than that, ive seen good guys come from no previous experience and I've also seen horrible priors. There are assholes everywhere, so I personally think it comes down to the person. I was an ROTC guy, and you had better believe that I really had no idea what our sailors do when I first got to the fleet (a couple months shy of promoting to O3 no less). I also had/have an awesome group of Chiefs/Senior Chiefs that invited me in and have taught me the things I need to know. Having prior experience would have helped initially, but with an open mind, a good FNG demeanor, and a Chiefs mess that knows how to train their JOs, you can do fine. It's all in the attitude of the guy. I think a lot of folks let the ENS/2lt bars go to their heads for a while, but the quicker you realize that you have done nothing worthwhile to anyone at that point, the better.

That all being said, I thought ROTC was a good program, and it got me in the door with a lot less pain than my friends that went to USNA or OCS. The time suck is minimal and you get to do some cool things during the summers you are in school. Most important thing is getting the degree so that you can get your commission.

If your going to do the military route, do the ROTC thing just for the fact of PAY! I hang out with alot of Army warrant officers (an odd know it all group of people)as well as a few captain and above dentists that joined the Army to pay for the dental schooling. like FLYNAVY stated, there are assholes everywhere, and as an officer your life in the military is easier.

FLYNAVY you are probably one of the few. I'm still dealing with even 05s that don't understand or trust the Mess to take care of them.
