Residents of Portland, OR I have a question for YOU!

I'm an East Coaster, and have an opportunity to move out to the Pacific North West. Specifically the Portland, OR area. I have a few neighborhoods in mind, like the King City area. I just have a few questions:

    - What is the area like? Shops, restaurants, etc. Any good ones in walking distance?
    - No offense to those that might live there, but is it a good neighborhood, or an 'iffy' one?
    - Personally, would you live there?

P.S. Bugs aren't on the top of my list of likes, so in a home I'd like to address that as quick as possible. Are termites, cockroaches, etc prevalent in the PNW area? Are there other types of harmful insects that cause damage to homes to be wary of?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    -Dale

Bugs aren't really a problem here.
King City? That is a retirement community between Tigard and Tualatin about 10 miles south of Portland.

Not a sketchy area at all. Lots of stores and Bridgeport Plaza nearby. About equal distance from the coast and the mountains and a pretty active e30 community. The economy isn't good so I would highly recommend finding a job before you consider moving.

Thank you for the clarification on the retirement community aspect. The search continues! Have any recommendations to look for in the Portland area?

I lived in Portland all my life (25 years)

Are you looking to buy or rent?

If you're looking to rent The "Pearl" is a very nice area. Lots of shops close by all the bars/clubs are 4-5 blocks away. If you're looking to buy I can pass on the contact info from our relator we used when we bought a house. She knows Portland very well.

We have lots of cool shops and breweries all over Portland. There really aren't many bad spots in Portland. Some parts of North Portland and the 82nd area can get sketchy at night.

I hope you are used to the rain. We get about 10 months of rain a year. So far this summer we have only had maybe one straight week of nice days.

Over all Portland is a fun place to live. We have just about everything you would want to do here from windsurfing, snowboarding, racing and hiking. The city is VERY VERY bike friendly. We have bike lanes all over the city. If you have any other questions let me know.

As to where, that really depends on what you are looking for. Downtown, suburbs or semi-rural. You might want to post this on the PNW subforum.

Or just watch Portlandia. I hear it's a rather accurate portrayal.

I just moved here from Houston, TX and I love it. I got an apartment on the 23rd floor of a building near downtown for a pretty decent price. Where are you going to work?

I probably got ahead of myself on this one. I'm a future planner kind of guy. I'm 20, have 3 years left of nursing school, and then an 8-12 year gig with good ole' Uncle Sam before I'm finished military obligations. I'd like to move out to the PNW somewhere in those 15 or so years, the beauty alone is the alluring factor for me, plus the community from what I hear is very inviting and laid back, hopefully not to laid back though. Gotta love the hustle and bustle of the East Coast.

I'm more or less looking to buy in an upcoming neighborhood within a great school district/ or just a great school district alone. I'm handy when it comes to building things, so I'm not really afraid of a house that needs work.

So I apologize for wasting your time if that's what this seems like, but for me it's just setting up some plans later on life. I'd appreciate the replies!
