    HOA/landlord problems.

So the story is that when I leased my condo we had 2 dogs, both of them at around 15lbs. a piece. We signed off on 2 dogs. We recently got a room mate and he also has a dog, 1 6 month old cocker spaniel. We asked my landlord if the third dog was ok. She said it would be ok. Now about a month down the road she up and emails me a fine for $220 for the third dog saying that the HOA has fined her for the third dog and expects me to pay it. She is now telling me the fines will increase the longer period we have the third dog. Should I make her pay the fine? Should I have received a notification before the fine? Can someone get me a link that would help me figure out the HOA's regulations for my area? I want to make sure these "HOA" fines are legit, or whether my landlord is trying to fuck me over for more money. I've been searching online for 3 hours now and nothing.

Wouldn't she have some sort of written receipt or citation for the fine?

Sort of. TIt was a citation, but it looked like something a 4th grader could make on ms paint. The only contact I've had with her about this is an email response from her.

Is this through a property management company, or a private owner? Did she just "tell" you it would be okay to have the 3rd dog, or did you get official documentation stating that it was okay? Do you have documentation outlining the fines for pets, and does it state they are able to increase them and/or continue to fine you?

I guess my real question is...

How did your landlord get out of the kitchen long enough to write you a letter?

The fine is through a PMC of my town. They are fining my landlord, and my landlord is fining me. I have received nothing from the company itself. She's denying that she said it was ok in the first place. Ha. My room mate also went over to her house to ask if it was ok and she said the same to him. The form she sent me was directly from the company and the day it was sent to me was the same day the fine was due. So....idk?

I love not living in an HOA. Freaking engine swapped my car in the road, in the middle of the night and spilled oils everywhere. Not a single fuck was given.

Sorry I have no usable advice, I just laugh at HOA's :)

Fuck that she can't give it to you on the day it is to be paid.

I live in a HOA area, but they are very loose on the rules. Sounds like that chick is trying to get some extra cash for... groceries or what ever women need in the kitchen.

you need a copy of the HOA rules when you move in. Should also be online if they have a website. I use to fight the fuckers all the time and win since everything is so vague in the rules, they are looking for weak ass rubes who just pay up. But yeah like above when all else fails, Lawyer up, it scares people. my sister is a DA, o yeah!

also how the fuck did they know you have 3 dogs? someone walk around and look or neighbor complained, usually later.

                      Sounds like a classy neighborhood...

Do you have to speak Mexican to live there?

We're still trying to figure that one out. All our neighbors love our dogs, we have no problems with them, and clean up after them. So I don't know why it would be a problem to have 3 dogs that weigh together less than 50lbs.

My neighborhood doesn't have an HOA. I didn't even know that they were a thing until my friend moved to an area with one.

                            Don't pay that fine!
You have no legal obligation to pay your landlord that fine. The fine from the HOA is addressed to her since she owns the house, not you.
Personally, I wouldn't pay it since she told you that you could have the third dog when you asked. Now that she got fined for it she's playing stupid and doesn't want to pay it and putting it on you. Her fault.
So I'd say your both morally and legally not obligated to pay that fine to her.

I suggest that you read the contract you signed with the owner. If there are legalities in your contract with her then you may be responsible (i.e. tenant is responsible for all fines incured). It all comes down to what you can prove in court. He said she said is not a valid argument.
