Models and trim lines are different yes, but in some cases it might as well be different. BMW makes:

1,3,5,6,7,Z,X series. Now look within it you have X1,X3,X5,X6, all different models. Yes a 325 and 335 are different trims but the engine is totally different, along with other minor things, but everything needs to be designed. Now add in M packages and full M cars. Thats allot of shit to manage, where as in the glory days it was like 2002, 3, 5 series, with some M thrown in.

Oh and now the body style differences, 5 series gran turismo ... 6 grand coupe... its not sustainable to maintain all these, the model lineup need to go on a diet if BMW wants to make well engineered, designed and reliable cars in the future, not try and fit into every market possible which will in the short term increase sales but IMO reduce quality in the future.

BMW is clever. They're making these asshat cars for a couple of years, then they'll quit. Just enough so the cars are a one or two year thing, get money, then come out with some badass car to beat them all.

Just to add my 2 cents to sustanability, lets not forget new engines every 6 or 7 years must not be cheap.

The M30 was around for like 30-40years before it ended production.

BMW recently pattened the M10 name, hopefully it's the supercar fighter we've all been waiting for. But there really is too many models now. Just cuz the other brands do it, doesn't mean BMW has to. And the then there's whole half ass M car diesels and x5m/x6m and tri turbo M cars.

I'm a bit puzzled by how Porsche has so many variations of the same car. Really they have 5 models sub divided into a menagerie of models.

Currently, BMW doesn't produce a good looking car. They all look ugly. Its kinda sad really. Honestly there are only 3 BMWs that I'd be interested in owning, and none of them have been built since '91. I say start over and build an updated E9, keep the shape, keep the dash, modernize the rest. It would sell like crazy.

I could probably own a 1series M just because it's the closest thing to a reincarnated e30. And the current M3 just because it's the last of the NA motors that M will probably ever produce, albeit I'd do some serious weight loss to it.

That Tri turbo M550d is actually badass. The torque it has is amazing. Its almost an M5 from what I heard. But it gets 35mpg.

And id dissagree on beauty. The 1M F30 and F10 all look nice. If you dont like it go back to the past. I like my E30. But its honestly not as detail induced as the new cars.

Yeah from an engineering stand point its badass and I don't disagree with the numbers it puts out but I like high revving NA motors in M cars better. That's what M is. I just wish the cars would stop getting bigger that's my main pet peeve. I mean when does it quit? when the 3 series is as large as a 1997 740il?
