Shameless plug for my Bike Shop.

So I made the shop I work in a facebook page. The shop has been around for about 40 years, and it really kicks ass. If any of you guys ride, or just have a minute to kill do me a favor and 'Like' us on facebook. If you're local to Kansas stop in sometime and check out what we've got!

Cycle Works " Not Your Ordinary Bike Shop" 2121 Kasold Dr Ste A, Lawrence, KS 66047

    Thanks,
    Joe

      Gave ya a like!

Out of curiosity, what kind of qualifications does it typically take to work in bike shop?

Depends on the shop, most shops I've ever looked at for work require a minimum 2 years shop expereience, which leaves you with a chicken and egg kind of scenario. I befriended a shop manager after riding with him & hanging out at his shop a lot. I had been doing my own auto repair & maintenance since I purchased my first car at 15 & had plenty of natural mechanical aptitude, so when he needed help he offered me a job. It was more of an apprenticeship for the first 2 years or so, really crappy pay, minimal hours, and lots of shitty jobs in exchange for learning the business & about 20 years of bike part history. Now pretty much a decade later I'm able to get work in just about any shop I apply at, and get paid fairly well for learning a skilled trade, and what most consider to be a desirable career.

There are some schools out there like BBI, Park, S-Tec, and so on, but I really beleve you learn more by working in a shop than learning engineering theory in a classroom when it comes to being a mechanic.
