Yup, most guys running home brew bio dont, but they are rolling to dice with it. If you burn a tank a month at 30 gallons, you need to log that, and show that you have sent the check to the feds and at the state rate to your state. Your talking about 30 -40 bucks a quarter at that use level combined, better than a 1k plus in fines.

Just food for thought if your going to go with home brew bio, or veggie. the big thing with veggie, is when it gets below 50ish you run into congealed oil and it wont run since your fuel is the consistency of lemon pudding. Home brew is better, but you will still gel up at about freezing depending on your additives. Still not as good a winter blend Petrol diesel in the winter

yeah I wanna run straight WVO. I have read into it a bunch and it just seems so much easier to just run a secondary fuel system for the WVO than to have to "cook" my own biodiesel. i would need the rig, methyloxide, etc. If I did it I would run a heated tank, etc.

Hey Grant [?], how ya doin? Came upon this after meeting you in front of Alpha today and lookin up who you were... I've got a '03 Dodge, modded a little bit, 360hp and almost 900 tq to the wheels and still gets better than 20 on 'off road' fuel. I'm a diesel mechanic by trade, and many I know say if you use wvo it's not if, but when, you'll have problems, and expensive they will be. They do have fuel additives available, but even still, pump fuel of some kind is the way to go.
I would question your need for a big old truck, and the ability to park it anywhere near your house. A cheap one will suck your wallet dry and a nice one, well the same money would, imo, be much better spent on an ix, xi, quatro or Subaru. Erin's mom has an Outback wagon, great for what you need. Good snow tires on that thing and it'll go farther than a 4x4 truck that's anywhere near stock...

I totally agree on the ability to park the truck near my house. haha. I am not exactly sure what I want to do. Firstly, I need to bring my current e30 out to Washington. I would probably dd it in the summer, but would prefer to keep it out of the bad weather in the winter. (especially driving to the ski resorts) If I buy another car for a winter beater I would still like to get a truck. Maybe something smaller like a Toyota. However, I am pretty tempted to get another e30 since I am very familiar with them already. An ix would be a nice compromise. I have been keeping my eyes open for local e30s, so I will have to see what comes around!
Thank you for the advice! It was great to meet both of you today. I love meeting people with enthusiasm for e30s!

I preached it in another thread about small trucks and i'll say it again. VW Rabbit trucks are awesome if you're lookin for something cheap that gets good mileage and does good in the snow. I used to have one and I really miss that thing. I used to take it to Snow Basin every weekend to go boarding. I could pass a ton of the big pickup trucks on the way up the snowy roads, and all I had were some snow tires on the front of it. They were skinny as eff (155/70/13), so they just cut down through the snow to the grip.

It got great mileage, it was super easy to work on, had a 6 foot bed, and it only cost me $600. I was throwing my mountain bikes in the back all summer, and puttin the board and gear bag in the back. Even ended up throwing the grill back there for lunch while up boarding some days. It was low enough that I could actually put the grill in there by myself if i needed to.

Man, i miss that thing. It was so damn practical, just a little too small in the cab for me.

12v CUMMINS ALL THE WAY!!!!! Had one. Loved it.BEAST of a truck. Did straight WVO. Made my one setup. Two tanks, Heated everything, done right. Plugged in all winter in Mn. Crazy cold. Always started. I will never do wvo again. It's such a hassle. Then a valve drops out and fills vegi tank full of diesel or other way around. Your truck is covered in nasty. I did oil sampling before and after. Iron content (cylinder walls) went crazy since running vegi. DON'T DO IT. s

ound like for u, a Subaru or a sweet little Toyota would be choice. But if ur gonna go diesel, CUMMINS12v all day long.
                      Now with 2.7i power!!!

An IDI for a winter beater.... Fine as long as it doesn't actually get cold out.

I would second the suggestion of a gasser for what you are looking for. If not, the advice in this thread is pretty much golden.

I wouldn't touch an IDI engine with a 10 ft pole.
