Because they got the design right the first time and haven't had to make it drastically different for it to still look thoroughly modern and sophisticated.

Well if you want to put it that way.

The IPhone is the Porsche 911 of phones, it does lots of things very well all the time.

Android is an Italian/British Sports car, if you shop and get the correct one is it amazing at everything, although you may run into a bump in the experience from time to time.

Apple/Samsung/Motorola/HTC have devices that fall under that catagory.

I think having ubiquity was more important than control. Being said I am really happy to see Google selling directly and actually advertising Nexus devices. I think that will do a lot. If Nexii start selling in higher volumes it will put more pressure on manufacturers to keep up.

I wont be going back to a non-Nexus. Sense was good in the 1.x days of Android but its only a shadow of what it was then, now Android is a platform that is ready to stand on its own. Id love to see manufacturers differentiate on hardware and, if they want, create some custom applications/widgets that are exclusive to their handsets but not mess with the core.

Now I just need to get the girlfriend on the Nexus S (unless Google releases a good 4" Nexus by Jan).

Consider Motorola and Samsung dev devices as well, better hardware (at the moment certainly) and just as much tinkering/roming potential.

Google does need to grow a pair and bring back the Android update alliance. They mentioned it once during the launch of ICS (I think ICS) and never mentioned it again.. Bad google!
