+4 (wait..5?) on the crate training. A crate is not punishment, it's a safe place for your dog. I crated my GSP for the first 2 years I had him to curb destructive chewing & relieving himself indoors and I'm glad for it, he'll be 4 years old this month & now he chooses to sleep in it on his own, with the door open. Provide soft bedding, something that smells like you, water, and a toy or 2, and the dog will be happy as a clam. I don't understand people who dislike crate training dogs, they're den animals, they want and crave a place like that to be safe, and that's how puppies learn where it's OK to relieve themselves. Give the dog a toy or some treats, and lots of praise every time she goes in, and eventually she'll learn to love it.
Edit; It's your dog, not the GF's, train the dog the right way from the get-go or both you & she (dog) will be fighting each other until the day she dies or you turn her in to a shelter because she's out of control, and worse of all, neither of you will be able to live a fulfilling, happy life. I've seen it happen, there are no inherently bad dogs, just bad owners that create problem animals.Last edited by quikveedb2; 10-10-2012, 12:48 PM.Originally posted by DozyproductionsYou know why you're drinking that Pabst? "I'm thinking that the Rottweiler is intimidating my girl and thus Elsa doesn't want to do her business in the yard"
I think youve hit the nail on the head here.. When Im taking a shit in my front yard and Graciella walks out and sees me it really puts a damper on things.Comment

We crate trained both of our girls when they were puppies. We moved in to our new house a few months ago and set up their crates just in case. Both of them sleep in them if we leave them open.
That's at 4 and 7 years old. These are dogs that haven't been in a crate in years. Proper crate training is not a punishment.

Hey. Slammin.
Crate training works. All dogs crave a dwelling, and they will not piss or shit in it. A room is not a safe dwelling for them. Not small enough.
Also, spending hours outside just standing there not giving the dog any attention until it does both its duties, and then praise and walk back inside.
Then repeat after 3 hours.
Why reinvent the wheel?
EDIT: Also, don't trust her to stick to the plan. Everyone differs, and you have to be THE person to do everything with it. Welcome to caring for a cheap psuedo-child. Consistency is absolutely vitalComment

Id just build the fence. As retarted and stupid as this sounds.
It will make your house look nicer,Two shut the rottie up.
Plus if it were me,i dont want the neighbors looking in my backyard.
Yea its a alot of beer money, but plus barking dogs getting annoying fast.

Well our doby was already going out on his own accord, when we got him 8 weeks old.
Our 4 month old chiwowa on the other hand is all over the join, she wont poo or pee inside unless it is night time, I think she is affrade of the dark or just dosn't like the cold.
I usually just try to catch her in the act take her out side and get her to finish out there then give her a treat.sigpicComment

If done properly the dog will not see her crate as punishment, it will become her personal space. Crates have been the best tool for my last few dogs.I really don't want to crate her. She already sees her room as punishment. She soiled her bed yesterday so all she's got is some cardboard I broke down for her to lay one. Yeah, I feel terrible, but she's got to learn.
I'm mostly afraid the Rotti will jump the fence. Her doghouse butts up to it and she could easily get on top and pop right over. I figure we'll wait a few months and see how that Rotti likes patronizing an 85lb Shepherd, maybe more. She's huge for 14 weeks.
Part of this is I really don't like Rottis. Not in the sense that I want them all put down, but in the sense that I want nothing to do with them.
The neighboring house on the other side is foreclosed on, so maybe we'll find a way to let Elsa loose in there, lol. The yard has an 8ft tall wood fence too. Maybe we'll just have that migrate over to my yard, haha.:shock:Originally posted by blunttechLevent guzzles vanilla hazelnut creamer like its my semenComment

Wild dogs are big on dens, crates aren't a punishment. You just need to get a big enough one and have a mechanism to block out light so she can think she is underground (safe) and she will love it.
If the rotti is that bad mace the fucking thing the moment it starts going over the fence. Once is enough.Im now E30less.

Whelp, we looked at crates last night. I think we're going to give it another week and see where she's at. Last night she did really well. I set an alarm for 3, but got up at two. Took her out and she did her business, treat, praise, back inside. Up at 7 for work, outside, pee, treat, praise. Before I left, 7:45, outside, poop, treat, praise.
I'm setting my alarm now so as not to rely on her getting me up.
He's cute! I love long haired GSDs!

We got her a Frisbee and rope toy last night, she was so sleepy, lol.
They have all the "BEWARE OF DOG" signs and shit up. Junk piled up around their shed, etc. Seems every Rotti owner around here is bad. All of them are typical white trash. This particular dog will let my GF feed her, but goes nuts when I try, so I think she has some abuse history with males. Same story with the landlady and her boyfriend. Ignoring her works great. Elsa looks over, then up at me, and continues to trot around. I just hate having to keep her on a lease in our own fenced in yard.
