Why Does ATF Smell So Bad?

What do you mean by "bad". I never thought of ATF as smelling bad... Unless it is burned, which it will smell burned. If it does, then you have a problem.

As said above, gear oil just sucks.

Thats why. Ive never met a tranny expert who wasnt crazy.

If Optimator recalls correctly, ATF is specified for use in many BMW manual gear boxes. It also can be used in a pinch for fox urine to attract slatternly women such as Threehz's mother.

I believe they used your mother's natural scent to develop the smell of the high pressure lubricant compounds they put into ATF and gear oil.

Changed my oil and trans fluid today, and it was my first time encountering ATF. By far one of the worst smells I've encountered.

I couldn't help but wonder what makes the stuff smell so god damn bad?
