    vulonteer fire, who does it?

so i've wanted to do this for a while. i was in a pretty bad wreck few years back on a motorcycle, didn't walk for almost 6 months and it was a local vulonteer fire dept. that showed up on the scene, kinda stuck with me. i know it doesn't pay, dont care about that, just want to do good and help others out.

what can you all tell me from personal experience? i'd be more incline to do the EMT or ambulance side of things, or anything really to show support and help out as a citizen.

i never was one but i got to do it for a day. the tools they use were awesome and the things they did all for nothing but the feeling of helping was compelling. it's a lot of work and i only got to do it for fun cutting up my old parts car!

I've been doing it 15 years, with my current department for 10 years and enjoy it tremendously. It will take some commitment on your part to get through the initial training and it wont end there. Getting up at 3am for a smoke detector that is chirping because the battery is dead gets old real fast but you still need to go, even if you need to get up for your full time job in a few hours. With that said, it is extremely rewarding to help out others and to be a part of something bigger than yourself. My fellow FF's are like my extended family and can count on them for anything.

Including showing up at my wedding, even my old department showed up(5 guys on the left). Caught me completely offguard, it truly is a brotherhood.

I did it for a year until I moved out of the coverage area. My step dad was an officer of the hall I was in, so I had exposure at an early age. (ride alongs)
