I understand relating the design to the context and program of the building is weighted heavily when it comes to marking, but personal taste plays a massive role in forming an opinion on whether you think it actually meets that criteria. That is what I didn't like about the course mainly- if they didn't like your work it would affect your mark, which is totally unfair and irrelevant to the criteria of the assignment/s.

both my parents are architects and both have jobs. they have been forced to diversify their skills to keep said jobs however. mom has arch degree plus does interior design for vegas hotels etc. dad has arch degree and is licensed contractor so he can manage the construction on projects he designs!

just saying the jobs are not there is b.s.
just like any field, its competitive but you can eventually work for yourself if you find you niche.

I work with a lot of architects. Many are good, many are not, and few are great. I find the quality of architecture has been going down hill in general over the decades. New students hardly hand-draft anymore which is mind blowing for me. But in general, they work very hard for relatively little pay, even the experienced ones.

Didn't make it into the program at ASU (very very tough)

graduated with a HUD degree.. got myself a job shortly after graduating=winning

you also need a masters to get very far with an architecture degree

yeah asu is a good architecture school. i agree, these days it is almost necessary to get your masters. and if you go to a school with an accredited program that helps a lot too

I have seen a lot of schools are doing a combined bachelors/masters 5 year program deal. ASU started them shortly after I started so it was to late. but I have lots of friends that are doing them and they are such an awesome deal

I designed and built my own house. permits and everything. It has held together in a very windy location in the Seirra Nevada foothills.

I will say a similar industry facing the same degrading quality and saturated market is in Automotive Design. Not one class on the basics of how a car works, yet attendance was mandatory for late night "fashion shows".

Those I've seen do well are those who have a design education as well as an engineering degree, i.e., those who use both sides of their brain. This is what I'm shooting for at the moment.

I'm a drafter also and I have architects and contractors calling me all the time at work. Annoys the living piss out of me cause they should be calling the Sales Reps...not me. Contractors are ok because they don't act like they know everything about MY product. Architects though are giant douche bags who think just because they stretched and mirrored YOUR product in CAD for a couple of minutes they know how everything works. Fuck architects.

Both my parents are. They have their own practice and work at home. This alone has been enough to make me never want to practice architecture.

I did it all through highschool but i mainly designed solids. The house project i did was way to boring. I desighned plenty of spacers, stickers, and other cool shit though

well, on a separate note: when i put cars and things into my computer models and drawings and things i get my kicks by putting in e30s and 911s and shit. my current project boasts a gt3 rs and an m3 (e30 no doubt) in the parking lot..of a library
