Definitely get a Geländewagen. Its affordable and cheap to fix if it ever breaks which has never happened in the history of forever.

This. Friend had one that the driveshaft went bad on. Cheapest option was $2000.

              He sold it soon after.

Chevy Tahoe. Motors are tough. I've got 240k on mine, and it's almost all towing. I know of several with 300+k, and they are all put through the ringer.

                      This.

My parents Tahoe isn't far from 300k. It always starts and is an extremely low maintenance vehicle. Plus if something does break, you can throw a stone in any direction and find parts.

Tho my dads s10 blazer had just south of 500k on it when he sold it. So I guess we have good luck with vehicles.

They are pretty tough, but they chew gasoline. Also I am looking for a more ergonomic interior. At this point my list is pretty much down to :

                        Volvo XC 70 (maybe XC90)

                        Honda Pilot

                        Toyota 4runner

If I can find a grandpa one owner XC70 with less than 80,000 miles will that be reliable?

If I look at the big picture, I really do need to be safe.

Read 2001 Volvo XC70 reviews from real owners. Find out what they're like to drive, and what problems they have.

Wow 7 pages and only one mention of Subaru. Worked at subaru/jeep dealer in Montana as a lot-grunt. Spent a lot of time getting cars unstuck after snow storms... the best all rounder was the forester xt. Pulled many a jeep out of a snow bank with that work horse.

Head Gaskets come immediately to mind then followed by they are not a true off road vehicle but a car with an 4wd system afterward or as backup much like Audi and some other cars.

                              just my nickel.

Tahoe while good all around vehicle is way TOO big to be off roading. I like mine too, 5.3L delivers decent not great mpg and pulls a decent load. I get 20 MPG highway at 67 on cruise and for a 6000 pound vehicle THAT's not bad.

If you're not looking for all out off road Mercedes ML is an option. They are a pretty solid vehicle, comfortable, drive great on road and can manage off road. They have way more cargo space than you would think. I'm not crazy about the look of them but pretty good bang for your buck.....
